if I may ask:
- is your company assigning you to singapore? or did you find a new job in singapore?
- do you happen to have a spouse who is a singapore PR or citizen?

well, I'm trying to relocate there too. and I'm from Canada as well... but wife is singapore PR. so if you got a new job in singapore, please share with me how you succesfully landed a job there... what was your channel (monster / jobstreet)? was it through a headhunter in singapore? or directly applied to / hired from a company there?

kn1ghtx, I found a new job and as part of the package the firm is relocating me. I found the job through an agent in Canada. But I'm in the legal field, so it was a specific agency. I can't say that i focused on Singapore in my job search since i was also considering Middle East and Europe...but if you can find an agency in your field it would be the best way to go (atleast for me it was).

I don't have a spouse or any other ties to Singapore....but if you know ppl in Singapore, they might also be able to point you in the right direction with your job search. best of luck with your search.

things included in furnished apartments,, if over 3 bedroom, furnished usually equates to fridge, washer, maybe a bed, perhaps a sofa, to fully furnished.

When we were looking last year, partial furnished was pretty scary as sprite said, the taste of the furniture left a lot to be desired. Never had I seen so many different shades of nasty leather furniture. From white leather beds to bright blue love seats

I would recommend bringing the things you love, consider buying a sofa here, and of course lamps etc.. always IKEA when in need,,, you may find you spend too much time there for little things. Beds here are same as NA far as I know, but double check...

And you can always ask the landlord to take away ugly things you do not want, or for things you might want included...

We are Canadians too and we moved to Singapore three weeks ago. We have been seen many "fully furnished" apartments before deciding what to rent. Most of those fully furnished apartments came with some piece of junk furniture...stuff which usually in Canada can be found around the garbage areas.
So, for the apartment which we decided to rent, we asked the land lord/agent to take them away and to give us a rental discount. We received a 900$ per month discount. That gave to us 10800 Sin$ per year. We bought very good quality furniture and 2 TV's for less than 10800$. You can find good quality furniture for a good price at Courts. Also we bought some stuff from Carrefour and IKEA.

would you mind sharing how you managed to land a job in SG and migrated there? what industry is your job? how did you find it? did you apply & land a job while you were still in canada?

and what did you put on your resume's personal particular? did you use like a north-american style (ie. just name, address, and phone)? or SG style (name, address, phone, age, marital status, religion, and the whole 9 yards ^_^)?

your feedback is greatly appreciated... ^_^
btw, isn't Calgary economy still booming now???

I am working in oil & gas engineering for a large multinational company. I got the job by directly applying to this company.
In Calgary/Alberta the booming is slowing down. Many clients are from US and its imminent recession impacted Alberta oil industry. Also the new royalties imposed by the federal government started to put some brakes. Some oil & gas companies are already putting projects on hold.

really eh? lots of projects are on hold? hmm.. maybe I should sell my mutual funds on energy...

btw, what kind of resume style did you use when you applied? did you actually put down: race / nationality, date of birth, photograph, religion, marital status, etc??

I used the N-American stile. However, after the first interview they asked me for my passport photocopy, picture page.

Does anyone have experience talking/applying directly to the local Canadian firms in Singapore?

I would assume they would be more willing to hire Canadians, but contact info is rare and i believe they do not even have local HR divisions. Looking for a job here so if any Canadians know something please let me know
