Singapore Expats

It may sound stupid, but I wonder how you go shopping in Singapore. What do you do with the hunderts of things in your shopping chart if you don't have a car trunk to fill it in? What about drinking water ( I understand that you shouldn't drink the one from the water tube). I found some online shops, but they seem to be quite expensive, given the weight of tons of mineral water bottles...

well i'm not sure about singapore because i havent been there yet but in australia it is quite common for a person to go shopping without a car. Here you can get home delivery for a reasonable price. Also if you are worried about the costing of that do it monthly or somthing. Or anouther popular method is to carry it home (if it is a possibility) or by train, bus. All the usual things. Or sometimes i see teenagers "nicking" a trolley to put their school bags in, but thats australia. But definently consider monthly shopping where you can get it delivered to youre door. Or catching a bus/train hope this helps

You can definitely drink the water from the tap - no problems, perfectly good and safe to drink.

Grocery delivery is widely available - very convenient.

Usually people don't buy that much at one go here. For grocery shopping, the people ususally go to the market everyday or few times a week to buy the stuff, so not that much to carry. plus, you can always get a taxi no problem here. Maybe you can split your shopping into more than one trip?
With the water thingy, usually i just pack a bottle of water in my bag, if it finishes, i buy drinks from the shops, sit down, relax and drink.

I do my grocery shopping once a week - For a small guy I seem to fill a trolley pretty quick and sometime you have to buy big items.

I don't have a car so i make do with the taxi's which are great value and pretty available (Except when it starts to rain lah )

Most supermarkets even when located on say the third floor or second basement of a building have shopping trolley lift access to the ground floor or Level 1 as the Singaporeans like to put it. From there they normally have a covered walkway to a taxi rank which gets regular service. Its easy

Just take five minutes to scout the shopping centre to get the lay of the land - work out which supermarket you want to use, where the lift is, where the taxi rank is, etc and Bob's your uncle. I always hit either Giant in Parkway Parade or NTUC Fairprice out the back of Parkway Parade. Both have good Taxi service.

I understand what you are saying. My problem is that I'd like to live near East Coast Park condominiums, so there is no shopping center near by. To take the shuttle bus to Marine Parade is no problem for me, but not with four big bags of food plus 24 bottles of mineral water...
So let my ask in detail: Which super market offers home delivery?
How can I buy bigger stuff like a TV or stereo? I guess everyone of us has something like that.
Does anyone of you really drink the water form the tab?

From what i understand the water from the tap in SG is perfectly safe and is the same taste if not better than forigne tap water s no worries, i see youre point about the bus. You may be able to organise sothing with the shopping centre, for home delivery once a month that way you can sit on the bus in peace ^_^ doing it once a month is very convienient and if you need anything small its relatively easy to carry right? as for home applances e.g TV's etc... most stores have home dilevery here in australia, my suggestion is to look up the different stores you might visit on the web and contact them to ask about their services... that way you know 100% what you need to do etc.

I use a grocery delivery service for most of my groceries and they do not charge me any extra fees for delivery - the prices are the same or less than I would pay if I went to the store myself.

When we bought a TV, the store delivered it (same day, too!). Just about any big or bulky item will be delivered by the store - sometimes there is a delivery fee, sometimes not.

We do drink the tap water - I put some in a bottle in the refrigerator as I like it better really cold. It's fine - perfectly safe to drink and no taste problems in my opinion.

I think that most of the supermarkets deliver (for free with a minimum purchase, or a nominal fee). I use Cold Storage. The only problem is that they will not deliver perishible items, so I wind up carrying a lot more groceries home in a taxi than I would like!

Kenny Grocery will deliver all items - perishable and non-perishable. They are grocers - they actually go do the shopping for you and bring it to you. I don't pay any more for items I get through them than I would if I went to the store myself - no delivery fee either.

Carrefour and Cold Storage delivers free all over the island as long as you shop for more than a certain amount. Most furniture shops/tv-shops deliver as well. You can also get a TV at Carrefour.

Buy in big bulks, and go shopping at some neighbourhood store for the fresh stuff.

Go join a car sharing program. Its something like pay-as-you-drive. Charges are by the hour. NTUC Car-Coop is the largest in Spore.
