Can anyone recommend a good PC doctor who could come round to my home and fix my PC?

my usb ports have stoppped working - anything i plug in is not registering

have you reboot the PC? install the drivers?

yeah, i have rebooted

basically, every usb i plug in now says unknown device and when i click on the driver details of each usb device it says:

no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device

I would remove the USB service from the Device Manager and reboot the PC to renew the USB devices themselves, not only the drivers.

I had the problem that the USB slot stopped recognising one of my thumb drives even though it worked before. Delete the slot and basically p'n'p back.

Thanks for the advice Scooby Does but I'm PC illiterate - when you say remove the USB service from the Device Manager what do you mean exactly? I have the Device Manager page open now...do i delete the first option that says "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"

Also, by reboot I'm guessing I just turn off and turn on again?

are you able to visit your PC's support webpage for help? Chances are you need to upgrade the Firmware or chipset of your computer.

what i've also experienced is that if you by accident short circuit the USB the OS will shut down the USB hub ( mother board dependant)

go to
> control panel
then >system
then > hardware tab
then > device manager)
look on the list for USB. ( usually at bottom)

right click on it and click properties to see report ( device is working correctly or similar)
( at this stage any device not working properely will have a red cross on it in the device manager list.!!)

delete the generic hub(s). then click OK
when you reboot XP will detect it again and re-install. Note you may have to have the driver CD that came with the PC or mother board.
If you don;t have the CD the drivers can usually be downloaded .

if its a HP note book, some of them have a common fault, because of the plugin and pull out, breaks the connection on the motherboard, same problem on PC if you are wiggle the usb too hard, the connection will break.

Mine is broken now, try to wiggle it when the mouse is plugged in, and it may make a connection, then lose it again, some people are a little heavy handed, when connecting.....its a pain in the back side, my note book as been repaired twice, for the same problem before. To be honest I think its a design fault.
