Singapore Expats

Hi,

I will be moving to singapore in a month (hopefully!). My first quest is a nice place to stay. I looked into the threads in this forum and the classifieds. I want a personal opinion from who live there.

I either want a studio or a single bedroom flat. (Two bedroom is fine, that I can share with another room mate but I personally don't like the master bedroom with attached bath and the other one with a common bath; because i would like to take the master bed and end up feeling guilty for not treating a roommate as an equal).

so, what is the reasonable rent for a studio or a single bedroom? I want to live somewhere close to this address: 63 New Bridge Road, Singapore 059405. Or, a 15-30 minute bicycle ride is fine too. I have no idea about singapore and too lazy to look at the map and see where this place it (I know what it is...).

If my budget is less than $1000 (singapore) should I just give up looking for a decent studio/single bed flat?

I would prefer a lot of travelling with a nice place to live as opposed to the opposite. Considering i don't know heads and tail about singapore, I would n't mind sitting in a bus for close to an hour and go to nice home but affordable.

i don't get to see a lot of studios in the classifieds (for that matter, single bedroom flats)... are studios/s.bed rare in singapore?

Not a chance I'm afraid, you might find a room in a shared appartment but the area you're looking at is not the cheapest

There are hardly any one bed places, there are just no call for them

what about a bit of distance? i can bike (motorcycle) or take the transit if it is not too expensive?

what about flats with two bedrooms? as i mentioned earlier, i don't like the multi bedroom with one master bath and the rest of them share another. can i get a decent one for less than $2000/m close to this place, which i can share with someone later?

even at a distance, i dont think you can get anything below S$1000! unless distance over the causeway?

durain & saint: thanks for the inputs. i have been going through the classifieds now again i noticed singapore expats site seem to give only the shared accommadation. i am going through the other rental websites - but a quick feel from this forum will be great.

so, most of the apartments i am seeing in the classifieds are furnished. if i can live with simple furniture which i can get on my own, do i still have a chance of getting a 2 bed apartment for less than $2.5k? if single bed or studio, let's say the budget is less than $1.5k? with 30-45 minutes commute from the university (63 new bridge road)?

if you are not in singapore yet, looking for a property is a bit waste of time. the cheapo properties will get snapped up as soon as they are viewed.

well... (sigh!) i guess that's what it is then. paying hardly $120 a month for a beautiful single bedroom apartment here in india (oh wait, my apt is not furnished, so let's assume it is $150 a month ), it is scary to get over there.
