I am hoping you could help me begin looking for some good weekend get aways that would be within 1-2 hours out of the city that a couple could do for a weekend or a short vacation. Also, a beach would be a requirement as well as some things to do once we arrived other than simply sunbathing all weekend. Prefer not to fly there, so a bus or train or etc mode of transportation would be great.

Well, I am looking for a website or location to which I could take a train/bus/taxi or very short plane ride. This location would have clear water and a nice beach and would be fairly cheap, since if it was close enough it could be a regular weekend excursion. This location could even be in Singapore but I believe this would make it more expensive. All suggestions/websites are welcomed.

Try Bintan! It's only a 50 min boat ride away. There are several resorts there with private beaches and I think you can get a fairly decent rate too. Search Bintan Lagoon Resort, I think that one is pretty affordable.

i haven't been diving in m'sia for some time now, but on my way out to lang/aur islands some years asgo, there are some tiny resorts built on small islands that look quaint.
they're less than an hour out from the pier, and the pier is a coupla hours out from malaysian customs...
i know this doesn't help, but i'll post more when i can remember the island names.

Specifically, I am looking for a place to try out before my friends come down to visit. The beach/island/other should be less than S$50 per night per person. It must be within 2-4 hours of Singapore by boat/plane/other and must have nice water and cheaper drinks, so maybe any Singapore island is out of the question.
I have seen some reviews on Tioman Island and that may work but the flight adds up a lot of cost for each person but cuts down on the time. My friends would be flying from Canada so their ticket will already be well over S$2000 and as such I would not want to add another flight for them. Therefore, a bus or train or even boat ride would be good.
Bintan looks ok but Tioman looks better but seems to be a bit too far, possibly by bus as this would cut down on costs but add time.
I have extended the time in an attempt to find something cheaper for my friends. Your thoughts are most welcome.

If you don't mind staying at the hostels (6 - 8 persons share a room) on Tioman Island, it should cost about $100 per person for a 3D2N package from Singapore, inclusive of transport & meals. Transport is a 4-hour bus ride from Singapore to ferry jetty followed by a 1-hour ferry ride to Tioman Island.

Try
www.coconut-golf.com this guy rents his place out on the Indah puri resort in Batam, it looks over the sea, it's pretty quiet there with a nice pool and tennis courts.
