Singapore Expats

I posted a few months ago looking for a good Mexican place in Singapore. Most places that were recommended were fusion Mexican food and really expensive! Anyway, just to let Mexican food lovers out there (especially those from California) know that I found a place!!! It's called Hungry Chicos on Tanjong Katong road!! It's in this sort of fancy hawker food place called 3 Budeez. It reminds me of one of those cool outdoor hut-like restaurants in beach towns.

The food is pretty damn close to being authentic! They serve ACTUAL spanish rice and their salsa is really really good! They make a really kick-ass quesedilla, fajita but I think their best dish is a baked fish with melted cheese and this slightly spicy sauce on top. And the prices are half of what you pay in the other Mexican restaurants.

I'm really excited!!! I used to have Mexican food every week in California and now can go back to my routine! ha! Yipppeee!!!

Good to hear. Do they have veg offerings? Could you tell if there was any lard (like in refried beans)?

That's the only difference between this stall & really authentic mexican food...they don't serve anything with beans. I guess they've adjusted a little to the local taste (don't think refried beans will be really popular with the locals).

They have taco salad (in a large tortilla shell), carrot soup (I know, not very mexican but pretty delicious), chips & salsa, and nachos (topped with melted cheese). I'm sure you can ask for quesedilla without meat.

Don't think they use any lard in their cooking. Everything tasted pretty fresh & healthy. Not sure if you're a vegetarian who eats fish (some do!), the baked fish is awesome!

how about the pricing?
is it good?

Had a $4.50 spicy beef burrito for lunch.
Tasty.
Not huge, but enough with a simple salad ($3 extra, not on the menu).

They don't have frijoles yet, but said maybe later.

There should be website going up in week or so.
They're just starting off and will be making adjustments as they go along.
Sounds like Mom spent some time in Mexico.

There's a parking lot next to the Caltex across the street.
A bus stop out in front.

Interesting area.
Also a Turkish kebab place there in 3 Budeez.

It's really reasonably priced, especially compared to other Mexican restaurants. Everything was under $15, even the main meals like Fajitas. I can't remember exactly how much everything was individually but I ordered beef steak fajitas (that came with tortillas, guacamole, salsa & sour cream), baked fish (that came with salad), spanish rice and chips & salsa. The entire meal cost me $26. I know I would be paying more than twice that amount in a restaurant.

By the way, the turkish pizza next to the Mexican place is really good too!

Arggghhh Taco Hell indeed! noooo...this is waaaay better. I just had it again tonight! I'm officially addicted. I judge mexican places on their salsa & guacamole. They make both of those really well!

But Sg's Taco Bells are terrible even by Taco Bell standards

It's not cheap, but Margaritas at Dempsey (and a few other outlets) is fairly decent. Good, cheap Mexican is the one thing I do miss in Singapore -- my kingdom for a giant burrito filled with meltingly smooth tongue and served up with rice and beans...

Given the low overhead of the foodcourt setting, don't think you can get any cheaper.

So, why do people think that Taco Bell serves Mexican food?
