Singapore Expats

hello

We are joining you soon in Singapore in august. We have 3 children 7, 2 and 2. DH is going to sort out the accomodation at the end of june (hopefully!! ) We were wondering what would be the disadvantages of living on the ground floor? (noisy?).

Street noises and any other noises from pool parties, peeping toms, house breakins, but if you have a dog, it's good.

No wind which is a con!

No need to climb the stairs if the elevators broke down. Even if they are functional, there is no need for you to wait til it reaches your floor or ground floor. you will have a back door, which in some condos, lead to the swimming pool if it has one. Some condos I know have a small garden area for each tenant on the ground floor.

I did live in a ground floor appartment but it was a relatively small complex away from the main road so noise wasn't an issue.

if you get a garden, and that's what you like, then not too bad.

Lots of ants, but lots of nice greenery too.

I'd worry about the 2 year old getting to the pool without you knowing it. Also, it's rare, but easier to break into a ground floor unit I should think.

You dont live in perpetual fear of your kids falling out of the window (bars or no), the cat wont go mad and provided your not right at the main gate its not that bad, and the ants have made it up to the 10th floor when I was living that far up so the wildlife will find you no matter where.

We lived in a townhouse condo, so our living, dining, kitchen were on the ground level. We had a very small patch of green grass(which was fenced). I don't think we has that much noise, except on the weekends with the pool noise as we were at the end of the pool. Our unit faced a street of houses and yes, we did get some noise from them, but nothing out of the ordinary. We were never robbed. I did have an agent walk in on me, but that was 2 weeks before we left.

If there are others living above u, potentially someone might accidently throw stuff down, into your private balcony/garden (PES), and it's your job to clear the mess.

The rubbish chute bin is real close to your chute opening.

Privacy issues when ppl walking pass can look directly into your windows.

If unit is near the pool, windows may get soaked with super soakers.

I guess it all boils down to how well the complex is managed.

I wouldn't call them guards, oh, well I guess they do guard the little house they stay in. The ones at our condo rarely left the place and anyone could go in or out, as they never checked ID. I understand they get paid peanuts, but I never felt secure with them there. Dogs would be better, I'd have to agree.
