Primarily a nice hotel in TPE two days before Christmas, and also NYE/01JAN, good view of fireworks etc. Also some details on how to get the fast train down to Sun Moon Lake as we have accommodation booked there 24DEC-31DEC.
We were thinking The Landis but some travel sites aren't giving them good feedback.
And finally, we'd really like to find a local guide (maybe one of your wife's family) - we indulge in culture and much prefer to find people on the ground rather than tour operators. We're after a "you know what you like doing, and what you don't like doing - so explain it and show it for us" kind of couple. Obviously, we will pay.
Thanks awfully, P
Give me a little time, and i'm sure i can come up with something, I believe we will also be in Tapie for the Christmas period too, 14 days, but i don't have a date yet.
Taipei is more of a business city, than a tourist attraction, but I find it much more appealing than Singapore, not very safe in the sense, that you can trust taxi's, very easy to be set up, for robbery if you have been drinking, so caution is required, not a problem if you haven't been drinking.
So what you can understand is that if there is a sign of weakness, they, the taxi drivers will take advantage, because there are many that are not registered, taxi's. so when travelling around ensure you note all drivers and companies, if you have had alcohol, then you may become an easy target, all depends on how many passengers are involved.
But really it's no different to many countries, it's all about being prepared for the worst scenario TianMu used to be the expat area, although many things have changed in Taiwan, but it is a Country that is very vibrant if you can fall into the local life, again the majority are from China after the revolution in 1949, so the races are well mixed, and the traditional Taiwanese have a hard time to survive I guess, something I have never discussed.
