Singapore Expats

My girlfriend (wife by the time we move) and I will be moving to Singapore at the end of September.

I will be working in the CBD and she will also look for work. I guess her best chances will be in the hotel industry.

we will want a 2 Bed condo close to transport. Looking for a commute of max 20 minutes. Our Budget will be upto around 4k.

we are in our mid 30's, no kids.

any ideas on what will be the good areas/condos within our budget?

I'd have to second that. What's so bloody amusing about it? It might be called common sense seeing that this forum is hosted by real estate portal. Or didn't you bother to check out our hosts here?

I would look at the East Coast for lifestyle and easy commute into the CBD. Perhaps a low rise instead of the larger condos might suit your budget.

Singaporeexpats is a good reference point to see what the condos are like, internal shots and location etc..

I would definitely agree and recommend the East Coast (look at districts 15/16) You will have a wide choice of different condos within your budget.

• information can be old (for example, city areas change from bad to worse)
  information does not provide a recommendation, except perhaps from sales people (not necessarily reliable)
  information can be hard to find (search for e.g. "recommendations singapore apartments" in Google and you will find any pages containing these words)

I don't think so. I am a newbie my self, the link has provided me with ample information, enough to narrow down my options, gives me general ideas on what to expect in terms of cost vs areas, different types of properties, etc. From there you can ask this forum for more specific questions. It is more efficient to all of us, and you can actually get worthy replies. Agree?!

hmmm... the OP is asking "where to live". this is a very broad question. www.singaporeexpats.com has an excellent selection of properties where the user can search by location, price, bedrooms, maps, etc. if you are a newbie to singapore, it is a prefect site to get an insight into properties.

without viewing a property, it is so difficult to gauge what you are actually getting or something you will like. so if i recommend location x and property y, what are the chances of you going for it. one man's mud hut is another man's mansion! there are hundreds and hundreds of condos in singapore. which one is the best?

finding a property is like going on a blind date. you can spec out what you are looking for but whether you like it or not after the date, that's another matter.

so newbie inselaffen, just chill. and for jjoensuu, looking for recommendation/viewpoint for a property and a moving company is chalk and cheese.

The OP stated he will be working in CBD and is looking for a maximum commute of 20 minutes with the accomodatiion being close to transport as he does not know Singapore. Other people on this board know Singapore well and can advise him which districts to try. Good heavens this thread is in the wrong section and Saint hasn't said anything!

i'm with you inselaffen. you come on looking for some advice and people waste time by directing somewhere where it is hard to find exactly what you are asking and offers no personal opinion and experience which is obviously what is being sought after.

seems some people like to come on and point out that you are an idiot instead of actually helping like the ones who have said where they would recommend. but i guess thats forums for ya.

If the OP had bothered to actually click on the link durain provided, the OP would have seen many relevant, property-related links.

Just because you have a reply to your question on this forum does not mean that the ultimate source of info being provided is any "fresher" than that previously provided on this site. At least on singaporeexpats.com the post date is visible for the reader to judge.
Furthermore, you have no way of knowing whether the anonymous person replying has any vested interest in the info being provided.

As for the lame excuse that information on singaporeexpats.com "can be old," yes there is some old info. Some old info can be timeless.

There is also new info.
In fact, some is so recent, that those that provided it may be tired of dishing it up again so soon.

It's OK if the OP was trying to take the easy way out by seeing if someone felt like answering his questions directly.

However, the ungracious, flippant reply to durain's helpful link indicates that rather than do one's own research, the OP seems to be expecting answers offered up on a platter. This does not bode well for someone moving to another country.

The OP had done lots of research on the site prior to posting. The OP has also seen many similar patronising and unhelpful replies on the site in Dubai which he posts on. They are a waste of everybody's time.

A list of properties on a site does not give the same benefits as knowledge of people who have been in the same situation.

It always amazes me how some expats forget that they were once also in the position of moving into a new city/country.
