Singapore Expats

Hello,

I am attending an opera at the esplanade this week. What's the dress code for event like this at the esplanade?

This is not the opening night gala or anything. Given that it's so hot here and my sport jackets being shipped here have not arrived, would a nice dress shirt and pant be appropriate?

locals show up in cargo shorts and flip flops...so !....

you'll be fine in a dress shirt. we love going to the symphony and my first time i wore something quite fancy and felt a bit overdressed. i was surprised at the number of people in super casual dress.

Any suggestions for good restaurants around there before the concert? Something pretty nice but not overly pricey (e.g. less than S$50 per person excluding wines.

hahah dress code, brought back the memory. There was once we were invited to a gala, not an opera one, but an orchestra etc...Friend and I went dressed not in our ball gawns of course, just simple evening dress, even THAT...we were so overdressed!!! We were disappointed,but got told that's how it is in Singapore!

Restaurant wise, plenty arond there, upstairs got more fancy ones, downstairs you have seafood no signboard, the thai express...there's harry

Agree with all the rest. You will find flip flops and cargo SHORTS.

But I don't care. Singapore is too hot for a jacket. But dress slacks, a ruffled shirt, a bow tie, maybe even a cumberbund... I dress because I wish to.

my first x'mas dinner party here..i was told be casual...so jeans n dress shirt....the other 4 expats in jeans n sport coats..all locals in shorts, flip flops..local girls in super short n tight clothes ( did not complain) .....but no dresses or suits...

Then that would be unique to Singapore. Usually if it is an evening occasion, the dress is more formal, then the venue and the scale of the production should be taken into account.

LOL....I don't get it -- people spent money on brand-name stuff here. where do they wear those expensive clothes they bought?

It's surprising. I used to lived in Bangkok, which is as hot and arguably not as wealthy. You see people dressing up for events like these (both guys and girls)...

Lots of people dress up here for things like the opera, theatre and the like. Thing is, lots of others don't, it is a very mixed crowd.

Go on, dress up if you enjoy doing it. You won't be out of place.
