Sorry maybe I am getting too old and too pedantic but is it too much to ask for people to write their messages in full words because whilst I am reasonably good at sending SMS/text messages I can't be bothered to interpret short hand when readig a forum. ie WUD, COZ and ENUF are not words!!!

I'm totally with you aussiemeg -- 9 times out of 10 if a message is peppered with dun, cuz, or wif I ignore it completely. I've learned from experience that in most cases it's a pretty fair indicator of the quality of the content of the message.
This is not an ESL problem by the way, what we've got here is failure to (properly) communicate.

This is one area where my thoughts are well known. And one where road.not.taken and I fully agree! (Even if my own English is not that great - at least I try).

My husband and I are all inn agreement here. I think it's a product of being older, more mature. He is also one who inherited from his father, correcting the mispronunciation of words during the TV news! Drive the kids crazy!

no la, where got. ppl got 2 reduce da words 2 save on bandwidth, carbon footprint, wear n tear on the keyboard/mouse and RSI mah.

So see, math and Language are connected. It doesn't matter how badly the word is messed up as long as the 1st & last letters are correct AND the number of letters are correct for that word. Also the words tend to need the correct letters as well.

I am only in my 30's, does that mean i am getting old? It must do as I quite agree. It is no wonder that children (meaning teenagers and young adults) have problems with spelling these days, even when they have degree qualifications.
