Singapore Expats

OK, Less than 3 weeks till come to Singapore.

I have the relocation company company around in a little over 2 weeks to come and collect all my stuff.

I have a 20ft contain, and cos I am only renting here in UK, I dont have much. The relocation consultant told me its less than half full.

So far I am bringing a bed, one seater sofa chair, a office table, a book shelf and TV, and a kick boxing bag and a gorge foreman grill and cutlery

Any recommendations on what I should be. Is there anything that I can not get in SG but is cheap in UK ??

You ought to take out an ad to find someone willing to pay you to fill the rest of the container. Just make sure you know what is going in.

Don't forget your clothes! and shoes! Most everything else you can get here. Aslo send an e-mail to Universities in your area, most have Asian or Singaporean students who might have some books to send "home" and would rather pay you than SingPost. We had 2 students in Indiana ship home books and clothes in our container. Their parents picked it up from our place when it was delivered.

Only thing I have not yet found in Singapore is real honey.......... not the running stuff. Singapore has everything you need but dont go and buy replacement items. Ship what you have and buy when you need.

Lucky for us we did not ship our dining table and chairs, or sofa. We found a condo with brand new items as well as a plasma tv.

OK might be a bit late replying - sorry have been O/S - but your shipping company should be offering to "back-load" your container therefore lowering the cost for you - assuming they can get it loaded and logisitically sorted. It then lowers their costs also, as they don't need to load another container and trans-ship it.

It's a pretty common practice these days.

Say, can i have a box in my container say for tinned beans and spam etc ?

sometimes it is cheaper not to bring any stuff and just buy those in Singapore. Almost everything you can get from Singapore.

I was gonna say cereals, cereal bars, snacks, junk food, biscuits, chocolate, chewing gum (if you dare), beverages like tea, hot chocolate – cos I missed these things when I was abroad..sad, but true. Overseas equivalents aren’t equivalent…

if you got the space, pack them in. you can bring in chewing gum too as long as it is for your own use (chew?) and not for selling it in pasar malam (night market)!

If you need some basic stuff, I am out of here by Dec1st and have to rid myself of a flat full of furniture, kitchen stuff etc.

DON"T pack too much food (i.e more than u will eat in 3-4 weeks) as stuff goes off very quickly here due to the humidity. CANS will be fine, but really limit yourself to dry and packet foods. TRUST ME. I buy stuff in the supermarket here and its off or stale with 3 weeks. Its just not worth stocking up over here.

IF you're a real bread fan you might want to but a bread maker and pack that. They're cheaper in the UK and the bread you will make will be better thaT WHAT you can buy here.

PAck some winter clothes if you think you might go skiiing somewhere., and if you have a decent bike and you like bike riding, you could pack that too.

Singapore is HOT !!!!

Anyway, my shipping container arrives next week. And I have found a nice little place to live on Marine Parade road. Its a little far from the office, but should be a nice relaxing place to leave.

I sure cant wait for the shipping company to come and deliver my box of chocolate. I am sure everything is melted inside.

Probably even my TV has melted away in this heat.
