Singapore Expats

Hi All,

Warm greetings! My name is Francis, I'm Malaysian Chinese and I have lived in Singapore since 1998.

I wonder if anyone out here has the same observation, that public transport - in particular MRT and Buses are getting increasingly crowded?

I reckon this is in no small part due to the influx of foreign workers brought in to fill the vacancies in the job markets, particularly the technical and production sectors.

I myself use to take the MRT to-and-fro work each day, and am sometimes appalled at the state of congestion. It is really a big difference compared to when i first arrived in Singapore. Back then, you could get seats almost 80% of the time.

I think many of us foreign expats working in Singapore appreciate a moment of peace and serenity on our way to work each day, because the hours that follow can really be fast-paced and stressful! I am suggesting that interested parties come together in a carpooling system, where each of us could enjoy smooth and comfortable rides to our workplace each morning.

I reckon you don't have a clue. The crowding of the MRT & Buses are primarily being caused by the increasing number of ERP Gantries and cost of using roads being governed by them. Eventually, your car will be the most expensive yard ornament you own. But at lease if you live in landed property it won't cost you anything for having the emergency storage facility sitting in your carport. However, If you live in HDB you will also pay to keep it there as well.

i get my ride at the back of pickup truck, sharing with construction workers (i guessed they are consider as expat too?). it's like having a driver driving you on a cabriolet car. wanna join me?

I have five whole seats left empty during my commute back and forth in my car. Maybe you'd prefer not to get wet but sprinkle some cash my way to pay my Shell V-Power? It's only $150 per 450kms

guessed you havent been on the japanese trains where they got staff to push you in!

or for that matter trains in Bombay! A 9 coach suburban train (no doors, no aircon) with a carriage capacity per coach of 700 carries 1600 at least. Thats 3 times the capacity. So if you are able to hang on by toe-nails without getting blown off by the wind while hanging, you are lucky. For me, this so-called crowd is luxury. I count my stars for my luck to at least have airconditioning on my head and a clean train.

I think they managed to screw up perfectly well by themselves.
