Hair Perm

I have very thick long naturally wavy hair, i was thinking to go for perm to give more shape and definition to my curls. But my hair is quiet dry and i'm afraid to damage it.
My HD advised not to perm my hair since it's already wavy, saying that perm is more suitable for asian coarse and straight hair
But i still want to do it.
Did anyone (with the same hair type as mine) go for perming ?
How badly does it damage yr hair?
Whats the pros and cons of cold perm and digital perm (more/less damaging, etc)?
