Singapore Expats

Hi, we are moving to Singapore from London end of December. We were planning to ship our wines over, but wondering if anyone did the same, only to find they had gone 'bad' after the shipment or exposure to high temperatures? I have no idea if our container will be climate-controlled or not. I doubt it. I guess it will only hit high temperatures for 1-2 weeks during the transit, or sitting in Singapore if we haven't found housing by then. Advice welcome!

Hi Singaporebound2 and welcome to the forums.

More than likely you won't have a refrigerated container. We shipped about 5 cases over from Australia, transit time in our case for the sealed container (i.e. sealed at Sydney until opened here at home) was 5 weeks. We sampled a bottle of each, fearing as you do that it may have spolied, but it was all fine.

One tip our shipping company did: they put the winde in the centre of the container, but also neither near the floor nor the ceiling; and they wrapped each box in bubble wrap for additional thermal insulation. You may want to ask your shipper if they think that's worthwhile.

I shipped over a bottle of jack daniels for some reason. But since my things have arrived, I still havnt found it yet.

Thanks to both of you for your input! We will probably have a party to drink up some of the stock, then just bring over the nicer wines and pack them carefully if our shipper agrees to it.

Dont ask your shippers as they would want the easy way..........just tell them what you bringing. Thats what happened to us when we came from the UK in Aug.

Ours went off, wife was almost in tears, she has a few more bottles and rather keep them un opened in the hope they are good rather than find out they are spoiled. Mind you they were in storage for a year, so God know they could have been sitting in container out in a field baking all year.
