Hi everyone... I was looking for the most recent posts, and happened upon you all. I need some advice: My husband and I will be moving to Singapore from Washington DC in March or April 2009. We have been desperately trying to start a family; in fact, I'm about to start Clomid treatments at the end of the week. Seeing as all the insurance companies seem to have long waiting periods, and other complicated stipulations for maternity/pregnancy coverage, my question is... should we wait to get pregnant until we've lived there for a year?
I'm so torn up about this because we've been trying for years, and I'm not sure I can bare to wait any longer. I miscarried in August, so I'm extra sensitive about the whole thing. If I got pregnant now, I'd be 3-4 months pregnant when we arrived... our jobs pay reasonably well, but we'll certainly not have a lot of extra cash to pay for a pregnancy totally out of pocket. Would it be better to wait? Are there any policies out there that offer coverage?

It depends. Can you afford to pay out of your own pocket? If you are on a good expat package, it probably won't make much of a dent IF you don't have any complications.

I'm not sure if your difficulty getting pregnant increases your chances of complications, but if it does then you need to be prepared for a VERY large out of pocket expense.

Then again, if you are moving here with an MNC, they often have expatriate insurance which is international. I believe that does cover maternity, regardless how long you have been on expat package (special deal for the companies). You should check with your company whether this is the case.

Just my point of view. It's a personal decision, in the end.

I haven't delivered yet but as far as I know the cost to deliver a baby in Singapore is anywhere from $6-10k. There are options to do it more cheaply (shared hospital rooms for example).

Before I got pregnant I looked into every insurance policy under the sun that covered maternity. AXA's International health plan was the best policy with the shortest waiting period - 10 months. Its expensive - about SGD$2.5K per year but I've already got my $$ back. I've found them easy to deal with in terms of making claims so would certainly recommend them so far.

Sorry I should have mentioned as well - their 10 month waiting period means they only start paying for maternity after 10 months, it doesn't mean you have to wait 10 months to get pregnant. So for example you could get pregnant 3 months after taking out the policy but they wouldn't pay your prenatal expenses until 7 months later. So basically the first 7 months of your pregnancy is on you. Ob/gyn consults are around $50-60 per month, plus you have additional expenses of ultrasounds, particularly the OSCAR at 12 weeks and detailed scan at 20 weeks which are both a few hundred $$. However, the big cost is the delivery and hospital so if you are desperate, this might be a good option for you.
