Singapore Expats

My wife and I read quite a lot and the books are piling up. We used to pass them on to neighbors or family at home but can't do that here. Does anyone know of a second hand book store? Or a charity?

They're mostly popular authors, fiction, from Borders.

You can drop it at the National library..they have a glass box at the entrance...do u mind listing some authors of fiction novels...i read jeff archer/forsyth/grisham and stefen king books...may b i can lend a helping hand..

There are a number of used bookstores in Far East Plaza in the back end of the shopping centre on the 2nd or 3rd floor back with all the tattoo parlors & paraphernalia shops. Give them a try. There used to be some in Serangoon Gardens as well but I cannot vouch for them still being there.

When I shifted to my HDB 10 years ago I unloaded almost 600 Paperbacks all of which were purchased new & read once or twice only. Had a massive garage sale and dumped the lot.

600 is a lot of books SMS! We've acumulated a lot in the last year but now where near that.

Thanks for the info SMS and BlueThunder... we now know we're not going to have to start filling the pantry with them!

Oh, and none of those authors are in our stacks BT. There were a few Dean Koontz but our neighbor borrowed them.

One other option: We read tons of books at our house, too. For any that don't make it to the permanent library, we stick a book crossing label in it and then leave the books all over Singapore... mostly in backpacker areas... but also everywhere else, too.

Yeah, I really like that... thanks! We hit some really out of the way places.. it'll be fun to see what comes of leaving books around.

My daughter is a big fan of Sunny bookstore in Far East Plaza, but I am too possessive of books and tend to hang onto them or pass them on to special friends. At the kid's school, they have a massive used book sale once a year -- 40,000 titles -- all for a $1 or $2. The used book dealers sneak in, and we have to boot them out as they'll by every last book in the place.

Every year the people I love get first edition signed copies of books they love for Christmas. This year my husband is getting a leather bound, first edition signed copy of Lost Moon by Jim Lovell (he cries at the end of Apollo 13 every time) and my daughter is getting a collection of Robert Frost, also signed and dated.

There is nothing in this world better than books.

alternatively, you could try the building at bras basah which is so famous for 2nd hand books. they have many bookshops where you could try selling your books to them. students love to go there and sift through the shelves!

that's a great idea! speaking of which, which would you recommend for shipping books from overseas to here? i need to get some academic books which are not available in major bookstores here and i was wondering if you had any experience of that since you seem to be an avid book collector =)

I've found Amazon.com cheaper than Singpost for shipping. Check their page for quotes, actually cheaper than walking up to Borders!

Wow.. hey book crossing really sounds like a cool idea!! DO you actually , or are able to track where your book went?

If you and your wife are that voracious in your reading, why don't you join the library? It costs around $40 per year (PR's are free) and there is a wide selection of books at a number of libraries around the Island. I couldn't afford to maintain my reading habit if I didn't join
I tripped over a used book store in Peace Centre in Selegie / Pinscep Road. Lots of titles to choose from (seem to be that the ower turned his book collection into a business!)
