Singapore Expats

Hello,

I recently heard that printing books would be much cheaper in Singapore then for example in Europe. It happens that a friend actually owns a book publisher company and asked me i f knew of any print plants / company to contact here.

Hes especially looking for hardcover and prints including many pictures.

Any hints? That would be great!

Probably one of the best known here is Flame of the Forest.

Anyway, a good place to start.

I think flame of the forest is more of a custom publisher, so their print job would go to another company. Apart from Times printer in Singapore, the next bigger one would be KHL printing, which prints a lot of magazines in Singapore and government collaterals.

Their rates should be cheaper as they buy raw materials in huge bulk and have a huge printing plant which is more efficient and the cost saving goes to you.

Moreover you need not do a press check as they are reputable and use high tech machines.

If you are gonna air freight the books over, then the cost is gonna add in to quite a bit.

Then again, it depends on your numbers. Try KHL printing or Ho printing.

It all depends on the sort of volume you want, esp. since hardcover books with color plates will have pretty steep set-up costs.

I use DigiLab, who specialize in small digital print runs -- good quality and reasonable pricing, although I'm not sure they do hardcover. There are also a bazillion companies listed here:

You should ALWAYS do a press check, especially on a book. I have seen things printed on million pound presses look ugly as hell because the "minder" is crap.

That's what it boils down to. The minder is the guy who controls the ink flow, the plates, the paper pick levels etc etc.

Always ask for a proof. Depending on the cost a wet proof is always preferable but not always readily available these days so an inkjet one is used more often than not.

Also, I would be looking to European suppliers rather than SG suppliers for books if it's going to Europe. The freight cost is the expensive bit as is timings. Alot of the European printers use the old presses which are still in superb condition. Location counts for quite alot.

I was looking to get my clients stuff printed here and then shipped back over but the freight cost was too much in the end to make it feasable, let alone the clients timing demands of 3 to 5 days. Everyone wants things quicker and quicker and cheaper and cheaper! Ho hum that's life I guess.

tien wah press is extremely reliable imho. http://www.twpsin.com/ but if you're looking to save on printing costs, why not consider malaysia, or even prc (quality is crappy though)?

This is a established and experienced company that provides great services. They print lots of colour catalogues and hard cover picture books. Kind of sound like what you are looking for.

you probably could check out COS printers. From what I gathered, they print books and export to Europe as well..

I think you can try Times Printing .. they got a plant in Tuas

The missionary group my parents worked with printed bibles in Singapore and I believe they still do. There must be some large scale printers around. They also do a lot in HK.
