Hi can anyone recommend me any good laptops for gaming? Most of the time i would probably be used for playing maplestory and some other games maybe sometimes doing some school work. I can probably afford up to $2000 for it. A desktop is also fine as long as it's good. I don't really mind the size as I won't really bring it out much. The most important thing is that I can play maplestory on it.

A desktop might be a better bet for playing games, laptops don't seem that suitable. Either way you need a powerful processor and a lot of memory as games are notorious for using voluminous amounts, which gets worse as newer games come on the market. Since you mention you intend to use it for school work it might be a idea to avoid games altogether, that way you can buy a cheaper machine.

In a different tone to the two elders above, and in line with my nick, I'm gonna actually answer your question!

First of all I totally agree with Plavt - you will get much more processing power (both CPU and GPU) out of a desktop - for gaming! For school work, anything good enough for gaming is already 'overspec-ed' for that purpose. Powerful GPU/CPU will always emit a lot of heat - and to pack it in such a small form as laptop is always going to cost you. Having said that you said you will mainly play Maplestory which doesn't require much power in GPU/CPU anyway, so it's fair deal...

In balance though, you may want to have a non IGP laptop - a modular display card in your laptop. Now, as have been discussed aplenty, usually Dell wins on value, and with your budget you should take a look at XPS line - for example M1530. Tweak the spec here and there, and I'd recommend that instead of max-ing the spec to the full 2000 of your budget do spare extra to purchase a longer and better protection/warranty (as I would always suggest to anyone buying a laptop).

Alienware = AWESOME performance - if you can afford one, then hop to it.

Dell = good performance providing you spec up the machine. This old Dell Insipron 9100 with 32.ghz P4, 1GB, 320GB SATA, Radeon 9700 512MB graphics handles Flight Sim (fully spec'd), Crysis, C&C etc.

Heard about Alienware and its supposedly superior performance.... but is it not overrated? If anybody build a rig with the same spec as what they do, you would get the same performance. Not to mention at least 20-30% cheaper than what they would charge. You just need to do enough reading and it's almost S$ 1000 savings.

The clincher is, if you buy notebooks (and also "branded" desktop rig) I rate one of the most important factor is the tech support / customer service. Buying Alienware from another country, how would you get your support? I'm not really a Dell supporter (or any brand for that matter) but I will take Dell anytime than Alienware, when I live in Singapore.
