Singapore Expats

Does anyone know of an inexpensive and reliable web host in Singapore? I need one with a website builder unless anyone can suggest how I can build a website myself with no web design knowledge!

I want it to come up when people search for my service in singapore e.g. under google 'pages in singapore' so presumably it needs to be .com.sg and hosted here?

It won't need to be complicated - maybe around 5-10 pages

Wino - well there is a lot more to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) than a wish list, friend 5-10 pages is unlikely to "cut it", unless you start to pay for google (and the others) to start listing you further up in the results.

SEO, particularly with Google, is a bit of a pain but it's doe-able for a price (as I'm sure you're about to find out).

In terms of registering a .com.sg address, let the aforementioned google be your friend. I wouldn't pay anything more than about $50 per year for a .com.sg domain, but then again it's all about what you actually need.

You can actually host any domain anywhere in the world. Many will tell you they won't do it, for obvious reasons (they want the hosting!). Just go through the formatlities and a NIC and you can host it on Pluto for all the internet cares!

you need a registered company in singapore to get a .com.sg domain. hosting the domain in the US will be cheaper.

That is very reasonable SE, do you know if their servers are in Singapore, or are they resellers, for the larger US Companies like Ipower and Bluehost?

I've been with ipower for 8 years, but the last two years, was really very bad, they had grown too fast and sacrificed customer care for cheapness, I would rather change to a Singapore server, if the service is here.

I contacted netsarius but they only do custom designed websites which were out of my budget. I think I need to go with a website builder and am considering yahoo small business. The only problem is that they cannot give me a .com.sg domain name - maybe because it's restricted to ACRA registered businesses and they're not interested in finding out that mine is!

Anyway, my question is: if I have a .com website will that hinder me when it comes to people searching for a Singapore based company (e.g. via Google for Pages in Singapore). I can only assume it will since the site will be hosted in the US (presumably) therefore it won't come up. I do intend to register with the search engines and maybe pay a bit more for a higher listing but don't want to shoot myself in the foot by choosing the wrong web address to start with!

I have a business associates who host websites in Singapore. I can connect you to him. Not sure about the price though, but he is reliable.

Also, if you want to set up an interactive site, do consider wordpress. My company website is powered by wordpress and there is no limit on how many pages you can have.

Besides, wordpress helps you better rank on the search engine as long as you update regularly.

Thanks Fated82. I've actually put one together with Publisher (took me hours!) so will see what happens when I try to upload it! Strong Eagle's recommended company have said I can take my laptop in to the office and they'll help me - that's what I call service (wouldn't get that from Yahoo!)

All I can say is that if in this day and age your host is not in a mega data center, such as those hosted by Singtel and Starhub, amongst others, you are making a hosting mistake. Bunches of people set up a server in their office... and pray for good AC, enough bandwidth, and backup.

If he is reliable he will be in a major hosted data center.

To answer your question about SEO, I believe google and yahoo uses IP address and domain extension, such as .com.sg to determine whether the search results comes up when the option "search pages from Singapore" is selected.

So, as long as your hosting provider's server is physically in Singapore, it should be fine. Getting a .com.sg domain is just extra bonus.
