Singapore Expats

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and I'm so glad I found this website, it looks like this website has everything I need to know!

I am Korean but a US citizen. I live in New York and currently in my last year studying at Fordham University (College of Business Administration); however, I will be, or at least plan on, moving to Singapore by the end of this year (hopefully by August). I will need to finish three more courses while in Singapore. These three courses are electives and I want to take them in the field of economics, finance or international business. I have been looking around online and in brochures but I figured I could ask actual people on this forum. In addition, are there any schools which are known to be "free-market"-oriented or Austrian-leaning schools? Edit: Is it possible to enroll into NUS or SMU (or any Singaporean school) for just three courses in order to finish my FORDHAM degree? I have spoke with my dean here and he said it is possible but I need to find out about the other end of the deal (Singapore).

While I attend my last semester in Singapore (I've been looking at NUS but I'm still early into my research so I need to find out a lot more), I want to intern somewhere in the lines of finance. After I graduate, I would like to begin working in Singapore - hopefully under Jim Rogers!

This is my first move on my own and to a place I've never been in (besides the great airport), so I am pretty excited and nervous at the same time! They are both two aspects of the same thing, no?

Anyway, I didn't really ask a specific question in my post (besides the university), I just wanted to post my plans and get advice about everything in general. I am pretty lost when it comes to this; and by this, I mean being all grown up so I'd like to know all things I should consider or research.

Gee man, u got good perspectives thou....Business studying ppl are very common in Sg, and welcome as well.The market is pretty crushin now, as everywhere, but as long as you want to study and have money, it's not a problem. There are many language couses, some specific; other- general. To the one word - everybody can find sth interesting. Dun be napum namja and make some researches by yaself hah

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I know the global economy is in a downturn but that's the precise reason why I'm leaving this country for Singapore. I believe Asia is about to go through a huge boom so I am moving to Singapore to work and study Mandarin. I plan on moving into China within a decade.

I do my own research. Asking people on a "Singapore Expats" forum is part of that research; it is not my only source. Anyway, I will assume that my post wasn't very good judging by the lack of responses

It's not that your research isn't any good, it's primarily that you haven't digested what has been said here regarding getting work here. Unless, that is, your research thus far extended to only finding this site and not searching the current threads.

Having said that, your questions on the university abilities to finish you degree would probably have to be taken direct to the university itself as it is not the norm. There are a number of other educational facilities that offer degrees links to Aus Universities and I believe there is one opening up in the near future. Curtin University

I apologize if I've broken astray from the usual postings of the usual people. I only wanted to start a thread introducing myself and saying hello to the community, and in doing so I was simply sharing my intended plans for the near future.

Don't be discouraged It's true the global downturn is making things much more difficult for job-seekers, but I can see you've got a positive attitude and are prepared to do your homework (read: research) before firming up your plans.

There is a lot of good advice on this forum, easy to find by browsing through the older threads.

And if you've got a specific question that can't be answered by reading the archives, the community is usually happy to help!

An honest question you could ask yourself is:
"Are you good (in what you do/career)?"

If the answer is yes, you are confident, and your intuition says yes, then by all means go for it. After all, you are young and have the whole world ahead of you. The world is your oyster!
