I have been living and working in Singapore with my husband for 8 months and have finally created an account on this site! This is my first post. The title is self explanatory. We are very interested in adoption and are trying to learn as much about it as possible. Can anyone provide any relative information as far as where to start / adoption agencies / regulations / etc...?
I have been searching around the internet for days trying to obtain as much information as possible and have been emailing many people, but realize first hand experience and advice is usually the best way to go.
We are especially interested in adopting from Cambodia as we have done some volunteer work there, but our hearts and minds are open to adopting a baby from any where our path leads us. Thank you so much!

Unless things have changed in the last few years, the US state department prohibits Americans from adopting Cambodian children. The reason is simple: An adoption costs around US$ 12,000. The median income in Cambodia is around US$ 300. The place is incredibly corrupt. There is strong incentive for women to have babies just to sell them to an adoption agency. So, rather than curing a problem you add to it.

well the point is definitely NOT to add to the problem, so thanks for the advice....
is this so even for children in an orphanage in Cambodia?

I am not a lawyer. I have not adopted. I have simply come across this information as I have read and researched about Indochina.
You might check a couple of these links, though.
http://adoption.state.gov/ - Guidelines for adoption.
http://singapore.usembassy.gov/adoptions.html - Singapore Embassy on Adoption.
http://adoption.state.gov/country/cambodia.html - Adoptions from Cambodia - you basically cannot do it.
http://adoption.state.gov/about/how/chi ... ility.html - Eligibility rules to get that all important US approval and visa.
Good luck - you do an honorable thing - and too many have turned it into a corrupt business.

If you have any usefull info that you could share, please email me at

You nice folks deflate my righteous outrage against the gun-tottling, waterboarding-loving and Obama-hating GOP types. Godbless and good luck in your endeavours in sharing your love and kindness

Hello, I am new to this forum and have just registered. My husband and I are wanting to adpot and are just starting the process. We are very new to the process and a little unfamiliar with the process. Can anyone give me any recommendations as to where to start and if it is even possible to do adoptions in Singapore as an American? Thank you!

Is this still active?
Curious to know how the adoption process worked out for those posting here? We are Canadian expats looking to adopt a Singaporean child and want to get feedback on VWOs (for the HSR) and adoption agents. Can anyone PM me?
Do I even need an HSR for adoption of a local child? Are there many Singaporean children for adoption?

I've successfully adopted a SC child through a local agent.

Just replied on my other post and then saw this. Can you pm me the name of your local agent and how you found them in terms of ease to deal with. Also some details of length of process etc. Much appreciated! I would PM you but I'm too new to the forum apparently to warrant PM privileges!
