Just send your CV to HR...most people do that anyway. Honestly recommendations hardly help, friends normally inform the HR that they have a friend looking for a job there. But that's about it. HR doesn't go, "Oh he's your friend...that's great, I'm keen to hire him!"
You still have to go through the channels of recruitment.

From what I've been hearing, even the acccountants are feeling brunt of this horrible economy we are all in now. Long working hours..did a stint in a big 4 for less than a year and decided it wasn't my cup of tea..

I have tried to get into the big 4 several times but with no luck.
In this climate, I have almost completely given up.
They are not recruiting at the moment according to my friend who husband is a partner at one of the big four.
There may be a recruitment drive later, in preparation to the year end peak season, but expect this recruitment session to coincide with the university leavers and competition will be very very tough indeed
