Singapore Expats

Hi everyone. I am moving to Singapore in a couple of weeks from the UK, and was wondering whether its worth me bringing my wireless modem/ router thing. Sorry, I am completely ignorant with all electronics.

Just reading the other threads, it sounds like the telecommunications companies like Singtel etc provide you with a modem anyway and its all cable internet. So i should leave my wireless modem in the uk?

I think that would depend highly on what your wireless modem router -is-.

Those three terms are not synonymous nor completely descriptive. I guess I can help by letting you know you can buy just about anything electronic you might need here for a competitive price.

There is both cable and adsl available for internet as well as 3g wireless.

Telling us which brand and model would help.

SIngtel uses PPPoA although i have used PPPoE in the past. ( never really figured our why it changed ( or maybe it was my Netgear modem router at the time)

What would be more helpful is if it is a CABLE or and ADSL modem.

If it is already wireless enabled, you can use it as a wireless access point (just change some settings). So yeh, bring it with you.

singtel ADSL is using ADSL2/2+. for cable modem, it is best to use the one by the provider (starhub). you can use your own wireless router with the starhub modem (if it is not a wireless router modem).

and if i am not mistaken, providers expect you to use a type-approved modem that they support and has to be approved by the IDA too (www.ida.gov.sg). lastly, cable comes with a landline telephone (using a VeCM - voice enable cable modem) whereas for singtel (ADSL2/2+), you need to subscript to a landline telephone for broadband.

so to answer your question, dump you UK wireless modem.
