Singapore Expats

Hi all,

My family and I are relocating to Singapore in a few months.

I have been looking at condo rentals in the Novena area. I discounted the East Coast, (which seems lovely, and also cheaper) as I thought there was no MRT access as yet (my husband will be working in Ang Mo Kio so needs the MRT)

However, I think perhaps there IS an MRT line that is in operation! Correct? Please help!

If yes, are there any areas on the Coast that I should consentrate my condo search in?

You want the green line which is the East West line. Here is a link to an MRT map.

Wow... there are a lot of lines on that map that don't exist yet. This is how things look right now.

no, there currently isn't any MRT station in the East Coast area linked to any MRT lines. and there will not be any for at least the next four years, I'd expect.

so if your husband is working in Ang Mo Kio area, best to get a place that is along the North-South line (red in colour) - does not have to be at Novena as it can be quite pricey (relative) compared to Braddell, Bishan or Ang Mo Kio (or even further north).

if East Coast was linked by MRT, I'd have stayed there in a heartbeat!

The EW line runs a fair distance from the coast, where most of the condos are, so you'll probably need to connect by bus (a few condos run shuttles). It's also quite a haul from there to Ang Mo Kio...

Things will get a little better once Phase 1-2 of the Circle Line opens, which is expected to happen by the end of 2010. Using this, you can get from a few coastal areas to Bishan direct, and then AMK is only one stop away.

forget about MRT if you plan to live near the coast line of East Coast. You'll have to rely on Bus and Taxi. In the last 5 month on East Coast i think i took MRT like 4 or 5 times.
I live near Parkway Parade (big mall), so they're a lot of bus line around, which still make it pretty convenient to go in the central district.

If you really want to live on East Coast, make sure you're near a bus station convenient for your husband. Remember that walking more than 10 minutes to the bus station is not really an option is this hot climate, if you don't want to wet your shirt.

I think the maps being shown here are slightly out of date. I am pretty sure the Circle has the stations between Bartley and Marymount (5 in all) now open. In fact, I know they have opened. Once this connects with a few of the more southerly East Coast stations it would be almost viable to live in the East and commute to AMK.

Yeah guys! Get you Sh*t together. The 5 circle lines have been open a total of 14 days already!

Even the MRT posters in the trains haven't been changed yet.

Course the OP would probably be finished his first lease before that happens (more southeasterly stations opened).

Guys, am I missing something?

How come a station called one north is on the southern part of the island and also the circle line? This is very confusing and I don't like it.

Could someone please clarify which of the yellow lines (the circle line I presume) are actually open now? I'm still not sure....

Solid yellow line now open, broken yellow line not due to open until the years mentioned

Currently Bartley to Marymount.

Because this little red dot is located at 1°14′N 103°55′E.

I presume that, if one-north is a hit, we'll see a "onehundredandthree-east" coming up as well
