Hello guys,

How come the office is so quiet here? Is that just my office or yours as well?

How do people make friends here then?

Thanks, :???:

That's a good question seeing this board is in Singapore and you are posting from another country. Been wondering about you since you joined this forum as you have been obviously either traveling or using proxy ISP's. :???:

Is it really nessessary to 'out' someone's IP address? Seems like there is an invasion of privacy there. Granted, it usually only comes up with spammers, but it seems a little intrusive to me.

yes it is necessary and no there is no invasion of privacy at all and they are not "outing" anyone as they are not specifically posting the ip bits...

it does not usually come up with spammers but it could also be from someone trying to do a phishing, xss, or sql attack who wants to leave a cold trace.

in the long run, road.not.taken. it actually helps your privacy more than anything and if you are at all concerned about privacy use a proxy server (better yet, use a SSL proxy) and let the moderators know you are using one, as far as i understand there is no rules in the board against proxy servers.

Well, RNT, what do you make of someone posting about an office 'here' clearly implying Singapore, when the IP address resolves to Guangzhou? Something doesn't add up.

just for info;

i know of companies that offer enterprise bandwidth services (for SME's) and their ips resolve to other countries (the one i know resolved to taiwan IP's)... they bypass the MDA proxy, ergo the censorship :-)

still do not explain the country hopping of the OP, but could explain some other cases.

I don't make anything of it. I don't need the IP address to lend credence or not to a post. I just asked if it's really necessary to post it out to everyone. If it's not information the poster themselves divulged, it seems like a bit of an invasion of privacy to me.

It's certainly OK to think this, but it is only an opinion and you don't explain why.

Dunno about you, but I'll take MDA's proxy over the Great Firewall of China anyday... :-k

lets set the record straight, the IP (8x4 bits) have been never disclosed here in this thread and as far as i remember, anywhere else in this forums. the only thing that is happening is that the mods are letting the poster know that they are onto him/her cause their pattern is suspicious.

no, it is not only an opinion; it is a industry best practice standard operation procedure. what it is only an opinion is when it seems like a bit of a human rights crime and white knights are being called to the rescue when the mods are politely (and sort of jokingly) letting the user know that they are watching him/her cause they suspect something.

jesse jackson always needs a cause :-D lets point him to this thread!

also for the records i did give some reasoning behind:
hibri2 wrote:it does not usually come up with spammers but it could also be from someone trying to do a phishing, xss, or sql attack who wants to leave a cold trace.
to add to the above (which it is quite enough to explain it):

there are a few reasons for not having a local IP in singapore:

1-you are behind a proxy because you care about privacy and security
2-you are behind a proxy because you are doing something which you want to leave no (real) trace of... it could be with hostile intention, just for curiosity or boredom.
3-your traffic is being routed by an international carrier (see my post to strong eagle for info)
4-you are not in singapore
5-you are not in singapore and you have some hostile intention (spamming, phishing, etc... see point two).

i am not remotely interested in having a information security discussion and less than that to argue about privacy violation when there have been none.

to recap; you asked a question, i provided you an answer and threw some advice as a value added service from a friendly and geekier (hence more computer savvy) neighbor, it was freely given and freely taken or rejected.

Yes my office is quieter today and has been this week. It's "that time of the month" and no one dares to make a noise lest his head gets bitten off by me.

You got a problem with that????!!

 :x

yah, equality...

if girls are allowed in the office during their PMS, guys should be allowed in the office while being drunk... it is basically the same chemical imbalance behavior.

well, not really... drunk people can actually be fun.

:-D
