Singapore Expats

I had a driver that collected me at The Tanglin Club today and argues about where I lived. He then said its only HDB there.........which is not true. This went on for about 5 minutes he took the long way and overcharged me.

I have complained to Trans Cabs about his overcharge and attitude.
Have anyone had similar problems?

so, let me get this right,

the attitude was that he said you live in an HDB? oh that should have really hurt your pride, eh? how he dares! specially when he is fetching you at the tanglin club

about the over charge... how much it was? S$ 20.00? S$ 30.00? and how do you know he took the long way? and by the way... over charge means he charged you more than the fare in the fares thingy... so are you saying that the fare was a number and he just threw some more dollars to it? please explain...

to answer you question, no... happily for me i dont have similar problems at all, i am quite sure of me as not to get my class pride threatened and i dont mind sometimes passing an extra dollar or two to someone who has to drive all sort of jerks all over the city and deal with their attitude...

Don't sweat the small stuff. Just because of your "pride" as mentioned earlier, you have deprived his kid of a Birthday/X'mas gift because he will not be eligible for a bonus year end.

good point! unless it is just as i feel it actually happened:

caller: i call to complain about a very rude... blah blah blah... said i live in an HDB like a local... took me the long way... blah blah... charged me more and because of this i cant pay this month S$ 85.00 fee for the tanglin club... blah blah blah...

operator: yes... yes... yes... uh hu... mmm...

end of the call...

someone ask: what was that call about?

operator: oh nothing, just another angry ang moh complaining about silly things...

so dazzlegraves so you mean to say we can just let this slide because its only a small sum of money? Are you saying that we cant shout profanities because of this injustice in this country? That the mere complaints of us lowly expats are not important? That freedom to express our discontent in this tiny country is not permitted or regarded as anti-Singaporean?

i agree with dazzlebabe so i will answer some of your questions...

the first question answer is actually, yes and no... if a bank or a doctor or one of those expensive restaurants or pubs is giving me some problems about 0.03 cents i may make a complain just out of fun and greater justice

for a cab driver? naaah, i will see it as a tip anyway...

i mean, use common sense and ponder, is this worthy of me getting agitated? for the first example (banks, etc) i get a lot of fun by making a rant and so on...

actually, no... there is no freedom to express discontent in this country, check the I.S.A, the public assembly laws and the speaker corners for more information about that.

now, about this forum, well, you guys can complain and are free to do it, we are also free to point out how silly the complain is... it is a cycle and a funny one.

It's sad, isn't it . . . I expect my taxi drivers to KNOW that I live in a condo because I am WHITE!!!!!

Actually, Einstein, it both shows that you have a lack of a decent upbringing . . . and it also shows that you don't know that using profanity in public is an offence . . . not just in Singapore.

My, My this is a curious piece of banter. Ok, Ok, I have never lived in Singapore but the times I have been there have used umpteen taxis and never had any problems. Actually I found the drivers far more respectful, they would tell me why they were taking a particular route (e.g. because of a particular road being closed or restriction at a particular time of day).

For all the howling that goes on, on this board and others about Singaporean taxi drivers I have yet to see anybody mention just how rude and arrogant black cab drivers here in London so frequently are. Their antics (if that's the right word) range from knocking people down, racism, laziness, not wanting to take you where you want to go and complaining about taking somebody short distance at the airport where they are allowed priority on return to the teriminal. I remember one was even pulling 'fish faces' at me after nearly knocking me for six having driven the wrong way up a one-way street - another of their 'stunts.'

@ OP- the taxi drivers I DO complain about to their companies are the ones that tout at key tourist spots / night club areas. Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, OT etc.

it was almost midnight, high heels (of course cab driver didnt know), and would have been 25 minutes walk..

I'll remember to carry flip flop next time...

All the other taxi drivers have been very nice in Singapore though

that is really weird, normally cabbies prefer the short distances trips...

were you carrying durians by any chance?
