Just moved to town this week from the States. Looking for a gym that with reasonable rates. Can anyone advise? I have called Fitness First and California and the prices are out of hand.

You will need to define what you mean as 'out of hand'. What is the price you are prepared to pay? ClubFitt and various community centres around the island have fairly good gyms and allow payment per entry.
If you are seriously into bodybuilding, the Fitness Force Gym in Cairnhill Community Centre is very good and the 'official gym' of the Singapore Bodybuilding Federation.
Failing that, choose a
condo with good gym facilities.

Think of California Fitness like a used car dealer -- they'll screw you over if they can, but if you nego hard you can get a pretty good deal. If you sign up for a prepaid contract of 2 years and get them to throw in enough free months, you can get a single-gym membership down to $40/mo, and if needed you can transfer it to any other gym for a flat $100.
Fitness First prices are also negotiable, but they brand themselves as a more premium kind of experience (well, you do get a pool and "free" drinks...) and I haven't heard of anybody who's managed to get them for <$100/mo.

You may ask for a free-trial ( a day, a week, two depends on a centre). Anyway, prices are almost the same~100$ a month/1-2 years contract.
Choose the one which is close to your work or home.
I go in Truefitness. Cant say I'm extremely happy, but if you manage to go through their importunate service of private instructors and spa sale-people, you will be fine.
where is the location?
