Singapore Expats

Hi guys

im a physio working in the UK. Just been offered a job at SGH and hopefull moving out in dec/jan this year

ive never been to singaopre and dont know anyone. gonna be an exiting chanllenge and new chapter. im hoping when i rrive ill get to know people and experiences some of the stories ive heard abiut singaopre

I am asking for advice and help really regarding the best places to live. how much would it cost to rent a room in singaopre and the cost of living relatively compared to the UK.
any advice would ,much appreciated and hope i get chatting to a few of you

If u rent a room in a government HDB flat, range from S$400 to $700.

If you rent a room in a condo, the range should be from S$1k to $1.3k

CHEAP!

food could be had at like 4-5 SGD or abt 2GBP! a meal at the local eateries. or about 15-30 at typical resturants! So your pay package should be more than sufficient to cover. Only high cost here is if you own a car, so try to stay near to the hospital to cut down on transport. There are houses near spootiswoode or everton road and is a stone throw from tiong bahru. I understand there are also hostels in sgh so if cost is a concern just stay there FREE! (or nominal fee)

That is so true, only one word which is Cheap...

But of course being one of the highest living cost cities in Asia doesnt means its really all cheap though.

There are definetly plenty of choices to choose from, from simple meals
at the local food stalls to the more expensive ones at posh restaurants.

I think the single greatest expense for most expats is the Rental.
This can either make or break the entire income and expense balance sheet and therefore selecting a unit which is reasonably cost effecient is the most important.

I'm relocating to Singapore as well in the next few weeks to start my 1st physio job, so excited but having the same questions as you.

I'm also trying to find somewhere to live and I've been checking out classifieds online but I think what I might do is stay in a hotel or hostel for the first few nights until I find somewhere I like thats near the hospital I'll be working at. I'm hoping to share with other young people working in Sg rather than live on my own.

I too have never been to Singapore and I don't know anyone either so hopefully there will be lots of chances to get out and about and meet new people.

Since I'll be getting there a bit before you I could update you on how things are going for me and hopefully give you some helful advice.

I'm a SLT from the UK, currently applying for a job in Singapore. The company I emailed would like me to give them an idea of a salary. I'm not sure where to start looking. Are salaries comparable to the counties you came from? Did your package have any extras? Please PM me with any info.

Also, how are you finding it?

im a physio i earn 1/2 of what i did in australia here in singapore, so sorry shit for us physio's!
but the UK physios seem to think its similiar to the UK though

So . . . go back to Oz, pay huge rent, have close to half of your income taken by the ATO and pay through the nose for fairly well everything

I have been offered a lecturing post at NTU, and my wife is a physio here in Scotland. Just wondering what is the best way to help her get employment- where should we look, how long does it take, and what type of compensation packages are available?

So I realise that this topic is just a little old now but I am in the same position as the original poster, UK PT with a job offer from SGH and relocating in Jan. I was wondering if 2 years down the line you have any pearls of wisdom you could pass onto me for relocating to Singapore?

How much are you willing to pay for the monthly rental?

Here's just a rough guide to rental prices in singapore:
1) Renting a HDB room cost between 500-1000sgd/month depending on location/with or without air-condition. Thats the cheapest you can get. However you will be sharing the house with another family. A room in a condominium can fetch close to 1000sgd

2) If you want privacy you can rent the whole HDB unit which usually cost around 1.6k and above depending on location.

3) Renting a condominium unit can range from 3000 and above. A condo differ from a HDB unit because it has facilities such as pool,gym etc and with security guards at the entrance.. although sg is a relatively safe place =)

Im just helping out Mr keeks here because he seems to be particularly concern with accommodation here in singapore. Although point 1 and 2 have been mentioned I did add in additional details just to make the point a little clearer. Also I've noticed that nobody mentioned about whole unit rental earlier in this very thread like you have said.
