Hi,

I had to cancel my PR appointment first time round because of a job change just before the appointment date. Got another appointment and this time I realize I don't have one of the required documents (birth cert).

This is stupid of me, but I wouldn't be able to get another birth cert in 2 days' time, which is when the appointment is

Is it okay if I submit my application *without* the birth cert? Or would ICA be okay if I submit it later (submit other documents first)? Alternatively, if I cancel this appointment (2nd time), does it mean I'll never ever be able for a PR again?

In such circumstances, a call to ICA is the best solution. It will save you a lot of hassle.

Don't think it is about luck at this stage but about preparing everything beforehand. Having said that, life goes on and I think calling ICA and asking might enable you to shift the appointment instead of cancelling altogether. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just make sure you get all your things together as soon as possible.

What will happen is this. They have a document checklist. They will go thru all your documents. If you are missing any, you will be giving a list of the documents you need. You will need to get the documents and come back again, get another number, and wait until you are called to submit the additional documents.

All you have done by not having the correct documents is caused another delay to yourself.

I called up ICA. They advised me to write a letter stating why I don't have the birth cert, and by when can I provide it. They should be able to grant me a grace period.

So, with this request letter (and lots of optimism), I'd be submitting my app form. Hopefully everything would turn out good.

I was too lazy to get my birth cert from my home country (where it was stored in a safe place) and have it officially translated, so I just declared in my PR application I don't have one. This was accepted and my existence plus the birth date in my passport taken as enough evidence that I was actually born.

Application accepted!! I wish I could give the same reason as Frank to the lady at the counter, but she was clever enough to know that my embassy can provide one. She accepted my application, on the condition that if required, I'll have to produce my cert. So instead of taking any chances, I'm getting one from the embassy. Just in case...
