Singapore Expats

I am a UK dentist and am keen to work in Singapore. I have tried looking for jobs on the internet and emailing my cv to most of the dental clinics I could find in the yellow pages. However, I have had very little luck. Would anyone know if there is a dental journal in Singapore that lists jobs available for dentists?

Hi there. There is nothing such as the NHS in Singapore and I think the way to go might be to open your own practice instead. I think a way to get started would be to contact the Singapore Dental Association or a similar body so you will know what licensing requirements you face and they should be able to hint you in the right direction.

I think the best way to get started would be to join an existing local partnership.

There is no NHS here but the local equivalent is Singhealth. Go to google.com.sg and do a search for "singhealth" and "hospitals".

Call up each of these entities to apply for jobs.

It shouldn't be that hard for a Dentist to get a job here.

hi,i am cristina fuchs(dentist from romania)and i am here with my family from june,i allready had disscutions with SDC...they didn't decide my case,yet..but i signed a contract with one clinic here ,they need dentist doctor..so i think you allready found something,...is a lot of jobs oportunity like dentist here...

Would anyone know about about the working hours for dentists, holidays, percentage remuneration and rough costs of treatment to patients (Exam, Fillings RCT Extraction etc.) After an interview with a dental clinic here, i kinda gathered that dentists here do not seem to earn much compared to UK. Is that true?

Absolutely true. My wife had a root canal and a crown done in Singers four years ago and went for private treatment. Now the root was infected again and the whole thing had to be redone. She paid more than twice the amount here in the UK (for the root canal itself and the crown was even more than twice as pricey). So of course you will earn much less than in the UK.

i kwon how is in my contract ,like dentist here i have to work 40h/week,percentage remuneration is 50% from all money you have done ,about patients costs depend of clinic's you work

I read in the paper someday that Singapore has 1 dentist for every 3000 people and the US has 1 dentist for every 2000 people. As a dentist you would charging less for your services as compared to the UK but the "volumes" should make up for low charges and hence your take home pay might not be that different. In Canada dental costs are much higher that Singapore. Having said that the costs to the dentists are also higher (staff) and taxes eat a big chunk of their take home pay. When I walk around I see a lot local dentists practicing with UK degrees so I thing there might not be a big different in the net pay.

This has to do with the fact that the NUS School of Dentistry (I think the only school for dentistry in SG) is very new and very small. Thus the only way to get trained in dentistry was to go to the UK (I think the government subsidised the UK degrees to a certain extend, thus no Aussie degrees). Hence you have a lot of Singaporeans practising dentistry with a UK degree.

My wife has done her BDS (Bachelors in Dental Surgery) from India. We are looking at relocating to Spore and had a few questions in this regard.

1. With a BDS degree which exams will she need to take to be qualified to work in Singapore? Does one need to have a Masters degree to practice in Spore? Typically how time does it take to clear all authorization exams to be permitted to work?
2. What are the job opportunities for a dentist in Singapore especially one from India? What are the average salaries?
3. We read online that you need to have an offer to be able to register for exams - how does one get a job without the authorisation to practice?

It would be extremely helpful if you could reply to us soon since we need to take a decision asap.
