Singapore Expats

Hello Folks,

I will soon to be a Singapore resident and have few questions:

1) I would like to bring my gas grill with me. It has the standard attachment for regular US style LP gas tank. Do the gas tanks in Singapore have same size attachments as they do in US? Since my company is paying for shipping, I would like to bring the grill if I can use it. Or, should I look for a grill when I get to Singapore?

2) Is there anything I should bring with me that I won't find in the US? In terms of cooking? Ingrediants, etc. ?

3) I am planning on getting myself a new pair of glasses before I leave. Should I? Can I get upscale glasses at comparable or lower prices in Singapore?

1) Why do you want to bring your gas grill?

2) in terms of cooking , we have basically everyone. but for baking , i'm not very sure. Be sure to bring some reese cupcakes!

3) Upscale glasses prices run from $250-$400, but you can usually bargain.

BRING YOUR GRILL! We are also new expats here. There are grills here, but the cost is 3-4 times that of the US. For expample, a charcoal Weber costs over 300 singapore dollars.

However, to use your grill, you'll need to live in an appropriate type house - large balcony or landed house.

Thank you so much for your input, this is exactly what I needed to know! I have a Thermos Patio Caddy gas grill, hopefully I will find same gas tanks/hookups in Singapore. And yes, I have a large outdoor balcony.

Have you found any 'good' grills here? I can find the lower-end weber and a couple of others, all pretty small. What I really want is a stainless steel grill, but haven't been able to find one anywhere.

Bring the BBQ but you'll need to get it changed over to fit the different valves here.

BBQs are extremely expensive here in Singapore, as someone else mentioned. Cheap Canadian BBQs are 4-5 times the price here.

What amazes me about this country is that there are some things that are so affordable and the others very, very expensive - in relation to prices of comparable items in the States. For example, a US$7 bottle of triple sec costs S$53 at Cold Storage!

You don't want the Canadian gas grills (Fiesta brand). They're what would be considered a "starter" grill in Canada. Go for a better brand, especially since they are all overpriced anyway.

Thank you for the response - now I will stay away from the Fiesta grill. Does anyone know where I can find a Weber gas grill? does not have to be a fancy one.

I am looking for WBER grills to buy in Singapore. Any ideas where?

Are the gas connectios different to the ones in other countries such as Australia?

Grills are expensive here, true enough. So you could reason that bringing yours would be a wise move. Only trouble is -- like most things here -- the humidity wreacks havoc on things left outside. I end up replacing our grills every 3 years or so, they simply rust out. I do think the gas tanks are universal.

Regarding ingredients. Most moving companies won't pack food, so it would just be items you can put in a suitcase. If you have young kids I'd bring back lots of holiday baking decorations, but most ingredients you need -- you'll eventually find here.

If you have a COSTCO or similar membership, I'd bring back that big bag of pinenuts, my god! but they are expensive here! And Halloween candy if you're planning on living in the Woodlands, 500 kids will come to your door in 90 minutes, no kidding.

upstairs of cold storage(Jln Jalita) on Holland Road..Had a decent display of Webbers last week..Nice small gas bbq was around 900 sing though..Not sure about charcoal
