Singapore Expats

im currently studying a 2 year IT computer networking program in Toronto, Canada (i love toronto) i visited singapore summer 2009 but now i want to experience working and living in singapore...i have some questions about the whole application process. i've been reading the forum a lot and there is SOME smart people on here that i think could maybe give me some advice.

i think if i do attempt to apply for a pass, my best chance would be to try to get a S Pass so here are my questions. please answer as many as you can.

• 1. in order to work in singapore, do you have to apply through Ministry of Manpower or are there other ways to work in singapore other than going through them?

• 2. Ministry Of Manpower states that for an S Pass, applicants should have atleast a diploma (2 year) or degree(4 year), experience and technical certificates. which of these is considered most important when approving the application, particularly for an IT position?

• 3. i want to work in IT as a network admin/specialist/engineer (whatever you want to call it) and i've been checking singapore job boards daily and i see many job openings for network admins. some companies states that the applicant only requires 1-2 years experience. is this really true? will Ministry of Manpower require the applicant to have more experience even though the company only requires 1-2 years only?

• 4. Does volunteer work count as experience?

• 5. upon graduation i will receive a diploma (2 year) and have my CCNA (cisco certification) in 2010, would that be considered somewhat equal to maybe a bachelors degree?

• 6. how significant is the institution you attend when Ministry of Manpower looks at your application? can the name of the school determine whether or not you get approved or not?

• 7. for those those that got approved or not approved, how accurate was Ministry of Manpower Self Assessment Tool?

• 8. i'll be turning 24 this year, does youth play any factor when approving applicants?

• 9. whats the weather like in singapore in january? its -15C here in toronto.

i know there are more questions i want to ask but i cant think of them right now.

You can't just apply for a S Pass personally, it doesn't work that way. You need to look for a job, get an offer and then the employer has to apply for the appropiate pass.

You really need to do some investigation in to Singapore. There are basically 3 seasons here, hot, hot and wet and bloody hot. At the moment it's coming to the end of the hot and wet season....... I think!

I thought they were

* hot and sticky
* hot and soaking
* hot and scorching

i know it doesnt snow or get to freezing temperatures in singapore. i know its hot during the summer, i just thought maybe it would be "cooler" during january like maybe 10-15C?. that question was basically just for humor.

ok i understand question #1 now. employer chooses which pass is best for me.

what about the other questions?....

Singapore whole yr is summer.
10-15C.. don't dream about it.

the lowest temperature ever recorded (since record began in 1929) is 19.4 deg C (on 31 Jan 1934).

25C is already consider cool for us.

Hmmm. Humor is a good thing but just in case you may want to check the location of Singapore with the focus in its distance to the equator.

He might be like a lot that live on the North American Continent and thinks Singapore is in China.

Answers for some of your questions hope it'll help,

As per my awareness

1.Only way is apply through ministry of manpower and your application must be proceed by company.

2. All the qualifications are important for MOM’s eyes. I belive S pass is mainly for skilled oriented people but most of the company offering S pass though you are professionals because of the salary limitation.

3.I don’t think that MOM will consider the years of experience what you have. May be they would, there are some peoples working in Singapore just having 1 or 2 years previous experience.

4.Should be considered as experience (keep a proof of service)

5.No idea, Hope some member will help you.

6.Not really but sometimes, when your company prove that your service is important for them and you are qaulified in all aspect then nothing done with branded institution.

7.No idea but one of my previous co worker application hadn’t approved but company rewritten the necessity of the particular service finally he got it.
