Singapore Expats

i am moving to singapore from chicago in february. i want to get a laptop. shall i buy one from the us or it is cheaper in singapore? tkx!

I dont think the difference is much. You can compare prices from the Dell US and the Dell Singapore websites, just to get an idea.

Besides not sure if the power cord will match the socket here.

So not really worth carrying it from there. Buy it here during one of the PC expos

For a lappie all the power pacs are 110-115/240-250V now anyway so a cheap change of power cord is all you need. For that matter you only need a plastic plug adaptor plate which are about 3 for 89 cents or so. So if you can get it cheaper there, by all means do so.

should not only look at the price. factor in the warranty too.

Another thing is you can get 0% interest installments for a yr or 2 over here, if you need it that is.

You might get that in the US as well but you will have to allow your US credit card to be charged every month for the duration

oddly dells arent as cheap compared to hp, toshiba or compaqs eg. with similar specs. in singapore and many of the larger screen models 17+ arent available either.

Does it has to be a notebook, or is a netbook also okay?

hmm netbooks are available here at $500 onwards. was in the states for awhile before returning and it's cheaper to be buying them here (was in ny, cld be cheaper elsewhere) than in the us.

if you're coming in feb, might want to wait just a month later for the next pc show in.. march, june, sept, nov/dec. might not be any cheaper for some products but you'll be getting tonnes of freebies - fight for the warranty as retailers will want to hold on to them to increase margins.

serious I don;t like to buy stufs for IT show ...

best is buy from shops atleast is not crowded.

next the price wise in fact sometime more cheaper .

if shop in Slim lim Square have to very careful.
There the shops tend to scam people .

If buying over here, please stick to the bigger players like Harvey Norman, Best, Courts etc as their prices are fixed and price tags are on all items.

If you wanna go for the smaller players selling laptops, better to go with an experienced expat or a local otherwise you might get ripped off.

If you want to shop in Singapore consider Funan IT Mall. It is well equipped and the stores offer better service than the shops in Sim Lim Square.
