Singapore Expats

Hey everyone,

although it's still a little while to go, does anyone know whether there will be some public viewing sites set up? Have there been some public places where people gathered for similar events (not just expats, maybe also locals)?

Would love to hear from you to get an idea what to expect

I have a feeling you must be from Germany or surrounding country as well, for using the "public viewing" as a name for many people gathering on public places to watch football on big screens.

Actually, whoever brought up this term during WorlCup 2006, should have better checked the meaning of it before. In the english speaking world this is actually something at a funeral, when the casket is opened for the family members to say good-bye to the deceased. Since I am here I try to get this term out of my head (which is quite hard, once you are used to it).

But anyway, I would be more than interested to know some places to watch the world cup in a public place as well.

I'd say it's quite apt if you are rooting for the losing team.

Unless somebody pirates a feed from Thailand or Malaysia we'd first have to wait for somebody to pay FIFA the $40m to screen the events in the firt place, no?

So it looks like I don't get a break from the kids and their MTV! Course, then again, I don't know which is worse, frankly.

I am sure there will be a solution. The telcos would not want everybody to watch it online since no one will buy any onlin sport afterwards, and singtel payed a lot for epl rights. Worse case we can always go to JB for the evening

@steff: thanks for the warning, I was indeed completely unaware of the "slightly" more negative connotation for "public viewing" - fell into the "Denglish trap" (yes, I'm German).

Public screening then? Still hoping that MediaCorp might fill in... Anyway, from what I understand thus far all "public screenings" in Singapore will rather take place in pubs, bars, etc. - anyone here has experienced open air screenings on public places / squares / amphitheaters / ... ?

Anyone has got an idea where one could possibly try to stage something like this?

The most obvious is Chijmes. The out the EPL etc. is already on the big screens and you'll occassionally find the ESPN bunch down there doing a telecast.

It's so late already but yet we've not gotten the broadcast rights. what plans do you guys have to watch the show?

I just heard on the news today that Mediacorp will at least broadcast the opening match, semi-finals and final. So I am pretty sure we will be able to watch these in a public place like CHIJMES for example. Let's keep our fingers crossed the other matches will be available as well.

Yup yup...64 matches and all with some shown on free to air channels...woo-hooo...

Hi Chris,

Harry's Bar just confirmed that they will be showing all matches at Harry's @Chijmes and Harry's @Boatquay. The one at Chijmes is pretty good for sports, I'm there often to watch Formula 1. They will also show the late matches starting at 2:30.

Watching baseball, basketball, ice hockey or anything that originated in North America perhaps?
