Singapore Expats

Hey all,

Couldn't decide whether to put this in relocating or living in Singapore but as you can see settled for this one!

I am trying to decide where to live in Singapore. I have narrowed it down to Holland Village and East Coast (specifically Tanjong Rhu).

What I'm trying to establish is what the commute is going to be like from Hollan Village. I was hoping the Circle extension would be completed but sadly not! I'll be working near Raffles place. Does anyone currently commute from here? How long does it take? Are the busses air conditioned?

Happy to hear views on Tanjong Rhu as well if anyone lives here but at least here the Circle is open!

Busses from Holland Village are frequent and airconditioned, but can be very crowded. I'm not a fan of Holland Village, but I choose to live on the East Coast because you're close to the beach, it's a bit quieter, and I've met lots of nice people here.

I personally like Tanjong Rhu (I have friends there). Pebble Bay is also nice, and a bit closer to the MRT & Mall.

The major problem with Tanjong Rhu is that it's very isolated, there isn't anything there, I would personally recommend going a bit further down the road to Marine Parade or Siglap area

With the Circle Line now open, it's a little less isolated, but if you have a car it is quite easy. It would be good to live close to Marine Parade and I can second Siglap (that's where we are).

Think I'll have a look around Siglap and see what's around there. I suppose it's a bit cheaper than Hollan Village as well which is always a plus. We won't have a car (much to the upset of the other half) as they're just too expensive over there. Plus having lived in London for years we're used to not having one!

Sorry guys another question - in the East Coast around Siglap what's the airport noise like?

Very minimal noise from airport fom where I stay in Siglap, it's hardly noticeable

Suggest to stay near MRT station so you won't spend much time to wait for Bus and transit. or at least close to main road with lots of buses avaliable to bring you the nearest MRT station.

i actually live at tanjong rhu, and i find it fantastic because it's near the city, but not too noisy because there isn't an mrt nearby. the bus stop (though it takes about 10-15 mins walk) has many buses that throng the city, and i can get to raffles place in about 15-20 after boarding the bus. also, with the circle line coming up, it's gonna make travelling a breeze, especially if you work around the CBD area.

I live in Siglap and I never notice airplane noise.

Heck, I live in bayshore road area in East coast which is perhaps the nearest condo area to the airport and even I don't notice ANY aircraft noise. Its quite amazing really the way they seem to manage this

That's quite amazing. I used to live in South West London and our apartment used to shake when the planes went over (not a problem at the moment of course!)

I've heard that the traffic there is probably worse than the planes as it's obviously the main highway to the airport. Are the condo's in the area well insolated against noise (double/triple glazing etc)?

Personally I've never seen double glazing in a condo.

As for aircraft flying overhead, I think they've just put Changi Airport at the Eastern-most tip of Singapore and have the flight paths over water. The only time I've heard planes was when the military jets were practicing for National Day.

I live in Siglap, we hear a bit of aircraft noise at certain times of the year (wind direction I suppose) but they don't come over our apartment (or anywhere near it) and definitely don't make the building shake!

Our windows aren't very insulated against anything, no need to keep the cold out so they're just normal windows (tinted glass against the harsh sun). The most noise we get is from these noisy Koel birds which start woohooing outside the window at about 5.30am

East coast is a nice place to live. I recently went house hunting elsewhere and didn't like the areas I looked at so I think we'll stick to the East. We like having the beach close by and it does feel a bit cooler near the coast compared to inland. The lack of an MRT nearby has never bothered us, there are plenty of buses, they get busy but they're frequent and you could always get a bus to the MRT which wouldn't take too long (the trains are as packed as the London tubes at peak times so bus or train, there's not much difference - MRT is a bit quicker but that's about it).
