Singapore Expats

I know, some of you will be reading this an think....no such thing as good british food. I beg to differ having just moved to Singapore from London where the take/twist on modern british has improved.

Anyway, since starting work my colleagues seem to be clueless as to what is or is not English or in particular modern british food. On this basis, have been asked to find a restaurant for to visit.

Any suggestions??

I tried typing in "British" and it only gave three branches of Chippy Take Away (guess what they're selling). You may perhaps be more creative with the keywords.

Ummm....was hoping for a bit more than a fastfood joint.

No, as far as I know you won't find anything along the lines of the traditional British food that is starting to come back into vogue lately.

The closest I can think of to anything resembling the UK is the Penny Black pub but it's just the same kind of pub food that any of the Irish pubs do here - you might get a Sunday roast or a cottage pie but nothing too exciting.

There's also Big Ben's Pie shop but they're literally a pie and chips kind of place.

Oooh, a new chippy has opened up - Tanjong Katong Rd and it's very good (I went on Saturday) - it's called Smiths.

Not quite the British food that Pumpkin was after I know, but good for those of us who miss our traditional fish and chips.

Hello there - yes in fact, there is a quaint restaurant in Holland Village which could be considered "traditional British". It's called Fosters and sits on the corner of Holland Road and the crescent.

Smith's Chippie is own by a couple of friends of mine and it's definitely very good. We get delivery every Friday at my local bar, what better way can you start a weekend than having a fish supper and a cold one

do they do jellied eels?

Hi, we like going to the Colonial Bar or the Col Bar as it is locally known. Wonderful home cooked chips (just like I remember when back in the UK as a child), Gammon, Egg, Pineapple and Chips, Sausage, egg, beans and chips, mixed grill, with HP Sauce.

Building pretty old, but quaint and lovely food (famous for their chicken curry)

LOL that's not really a chippy thing (or at least not where I'm from)..... but they did do wallies and pickled eggs
