I'm having a party in my apartment in a few weeks and I'm expecting a good 40 people. The problem is that I only have airconditioning in the bedrooms and not the main living areas. I'm only renting the apartment and can't install an airconditioning unit in the living area, so I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas.

I wonder about portable airconditioners, industrial fans, and have heard of a type of air cooling system that works with water?

Are you catering food? I had a party previously, and the cateror that I used, have a sub-contractor that provides temp tables, chairs and fans (normal and industrial fans).

You might want to check that option out?

From personal experience with air coolers - DON'T BUY them!
Also know few other people who fell for it, and they are all disappointed with air coolers.

Apparently they work great in dry climates (Middle East, Sahara..), but not in humid climates.

This is true for air cooler as it does not cools the air rapidly in enclosed space.
Air extractors that is attached to the windows with a socket will do the trick.
Another issue is your ceiling height. If you have a low ceiling, no matter what you do will not cool the area must enough.This is always an issue living in a humid countries where the buildings are made of concrete. The heat will not dissipate must enough.

There is a single basic principle such cooling relies on: evaporation of a liquid. This process sucks the heat in. Then, the next step is to condense the vapours back to the liquid state and this releases the heat. In other words it is simply not possible to get sustained cooling effect with closed liquid circulation if all the aircon machinery is within the same room.
Then another approach would be to evaporate some liquid (normally water) and not condense it back but in SG the humidity is very high and that's why this may not be that effective.
By the way, there are portable aircon units designed to channel hot air through a nice thick pipe outside of the room

Can you buy dry ice here (private, retail)?

I would think so. Check with wedding suppliers, they use it all the time.

Yep, uncle google good friend as usual. Food grade makes outstanding vodka drinks but you have to be careful (well, ...sober) enough not to swallow a chunk of it.
