Singapore Expats

I was so shocked seeing the picture of that young mother sprawled on the floor in the paper so sad and a waste of a young life at 32, but why show it front page, when she has a husband and children Any other descent person would have covered the body before letting a photographer near! How shocking for her family here

I didn't see the picture (and it looks like they've taken it off the link too - perhaps others had complained), but I know what you mean, very insensitive photography in some of these cases and I think they forget that children are capable of reading a newspaper too.

I've quite often chucked the newspaper in the recycling bag before my kids could read it because of photos showing dead people or animals - there's just no need for it, I'm sure we all believe that they're dead, we don't need photographic evidence and I'm sure their relatives don't either!

They should save those photos for the court case.

I've not been here long, but from what my colleagues tell me, this is the first murder for a long time. Therefore VERY sensationalised.

Any more news on this sad tale ?

your colleague must have been asleep for the past few mths.......for the past 5 mths i have been here there has been the kallang case and also the dad kill son suicide case.....there may be others which I cant remember

There must have been 5 or 6 murders in the last two years, that i can count including a murder of a young child though mostly committed by foreigners. Two maids have been murdered, prostitutes in Geylang, a famly slaughter house in Paya lebar, the cook in Raffles place, there as really been a high number of incidents, though all outsiders.

well, it's not like that's unexpected from the local press. bad news is rarely reported and if it were, downplayed significantly.

well, it's not like that's unexpected from the local press. bad news is rarely reported and if it were, downplayed significantly.

That's totally untrue for SG. I remember there was a case of a vendetta killing whichwas extremely bloody. It was reported for days in all the major papers and the local birdcage liner as the mystery unravelled.

anneteoh u are kidding right?? you are sticking your neck out and saying that there is press freedom in singapore??this is really one country where i gotta watch my mouth when I go talking about the 'ahem'.......reporters are getting in trouble for writing about the floods.....alan shadrake is in trouble for publishing a book on the justice system....pls explain where is the press freedom

several points:

* it's no secret about press freedom about singapore. see here. also here.
* i don't enjoy putting the sg gahmen down as of late. i just call them as i see them and it's just coincidence that me pointing out things have been more often. i do commend the gahmen from time to time (i give credit where credit is due) but apparently, they got a lot of that already.
* swearing at others? if you're referring to the mongol rally, pop culture is apparently lost on you. see here, definition #3; and before you complain it's NOT SAFE FOR WORK
* see first point and i've never said they never do. read what i originally said. i noticed you have difficulty processing adverbs.
* i did not come here to pick fights. i came here to express my opinion which i never state as facts and help someone every once in a while

There are times when one should just read quietly. The fact of the matter is, it's been a lifetime since you were here. The press "freedoms" here are a figment of your long forgotten memory. There weren't any then either. Press Freedom is like Racism in Singapore. It's here, it's blatant but it's swept under the edge of the carpet and woe be the individual who lifts up the carpet to take a peek and then write about it. We are not having a bash at Singapore, we live here and deal with it every day and not just selected soundbites that you get from international news that is generally vetted as well before it's published (those who haven't been sued into submission, that is). Opinions are not allowed in Singapore, unless it's opinions by the government.

Here goes Carlsum, I wasn't talking about freedom of the press was I??? I don't see why you had to jump the gun.

I hate it when it's the norm among some guys to keep barracking SG unfairly. What I was talking about was with regards to the reporting of murders. Just that. It's definitely untrue that there's censorship of such news. Totally untrue.

I was refering to the publications of murders and such depressing social ills that I read about when I was in SG. My point was, they were freely written, photograped and published as headlines on front pages in various newspapers; rather than being censored or dumbed down in any way, according to N.

I remember distinctly the murder outside a HDB flat with gory pictures splashed on the front pages. There was another equally high profile case of a young banker who went jogging in the morning but was raped and murdered. The murderer/s left her body in a hole. These were front page news. Moreover, it was followed up thoroughly for weeks. I wouldn't call that censorship or the prevention of negative reporting even if English were my 11th language.

Regarding freedom of the press - that's a different issue which is, to me, rather controversial and deserves its own thread. So don't jump to conclusions.

Freedom of speech never means one can abuse evidence or make accusations.

Anyway, me, not one to be brow beaten into submission, I'd like to find some opnions about various things when I'm in SG next.
I gave too many opinions when I was in SG right there in the MOE and was persuaded to renew my contract. In fact, many of the opinions we expressed - regarding work loads and a balanced lifestyle were taken and board and changes made to our suggestions.
Perhpas they vet what's useful and what's harmful babble , like incriminating someone without grounds. I'm not defending or protecting anyone as such.
