Singapore Expats

Hi,

My boyfriend and I will be moving out to Singapore in January 2011 (moving from London, both within Financial Services) and would like to get an idea of the better areas of Singapore in which to live?

By 'better' we mean;
Clean, safe, good restaurants/bars, easy access to the city, fun atmosphere etc...

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Clean and safe - that's most of singapore really so no worries there, with the possible exception of places such as Geylang or Balestier road which I'm sure you won't be living in anyway.

Singapore is much smaller than London so you have easy access to the city (30 mins) from most places really, but at the same time some areas right out in the heartlands such as woodlands will take you longer so probably best to avoid those.

Somewhere like Novena/Newton, East Coast or Holland road would probably suit you best, a mixture of locals and foreigners in each place and plenty of restaurants too, bars not so much (although holland village has plenty) but then you're not far to clarke/boat/robertson quay from any of these places and plenty of bars and clubs there

These 3 districts are all in the city.
It all depends on your budget.
Generally most areas in Singapore is safe and clean.

what's wrong with geylang? lots of restaurants and shops open all hours. lively, full of life and very safe (coz lots of plain clothes and uniform cops).

Depends on if you want to buy what the shops are selling

We've just decided that we are moving to Singapore in February for my Husband's job (in fact we are both in Financial Services too!). Have you had anymore thoughts about where you are going to live? I've been looking into the various districts and quite fancy District 10. Seem to be quite a few bars/restaurants around there and its not too far from the city. My friend has lived there for a few years so I've asked her where abouts she is and for any advice which I'd be happy to pass onto you!

There are quite a lot of expats living in Joo chiat and Geylang areas some lovely shop house conversions, it has a fun karaoke atmosphere without the real worry of hardcore crime you would get in some of other major cities of the world.

The best area in Sing may not be the most convenient to commute to your job. Traffic can be horrendous and public transport crowded to the point where you are standing on the stairwell of the bus.

Depending upon where your job is may well dictate where is convenient to live.
