Singapore Expats

Hi guys. I am wondering if it's possible to watch US tv channels in Singapore. Local channels probably show the most famous US shows but can I get a cable showing the exacts US channels such as CBS & NBC, National Geographic, sport channels with NBA etc? How expensive is the cable tv in Singapore?

I use A2Btv and it works great. I basically have a Los Angeles cable package with over 200 channels including all of the local networks , movie channels, VH1, E, discovery, history channel and anything else that you can think of.

OK that sounds good. I probably also could access US channels via VPN to cut the costs. Slingbox also sounds good.

We have paid for access to a proxy server (US based server) which also allows us to watch shows on Hulu. Probably can get a proxy server access for free. Ours is specific to Mac so if you are using Mac, IM me and I can tell you the company. It was $29 USD for 1 year. They don't offer a PC version.

Google 'expat shield' it's a proxy and it's free!

You can access US & UK TV from Singapore online using a VPN Service (Virtual Private Network) that gives you a local IP address in the country of your choice (in your case the US). This bypasses the country blocks that prevent you from viewing abroad.

I've used VPN Television (Strong VPN) for a few years and highly recommend them ($55 a year) - http://www.vpntelevision.com

I've tried to use expat shield and it only gives a UK IP. Also, it was really slow and was regularly blocked by iPlayer...Have you had any luck with it yourself??

Just heard of another UK one called iPortal. Costs 50 euros a year but works well so I am told. Again, probably not US channels unless the US show is shown on on the of main UK channels. (Which many are)

your best bet is to get friends or relatives to host a computer (laptop would be good to reduce carbon footprint and can be hidden away) for you on their broadband router.

on the computer (in UK or US), you will need to install a proxy software such as privoxy or ccproxy. the router will also need to setup port forwarding.

on your computer in singapore, configure IE for the UK or US router IP (WAN IP) and port number and start watching TV (like me).

Good link nakatago, but I haven't got it to work yet, I think since the time the Gizmodo article Hulu got hip and disallowed this. I've set up the TCP/UDP block but it's not spoofing Hulu.

I also never sorted out The Onion Router for this, if anyone has, please let us know it worked.

Oh well. Gizmodo has a knack for effing things up that should've have worked ok until they publicized it.

Yeah, georestrictions suck.

dunno about the onion router but did try TOR with privoxy.

I use Hotspot shield as my vpn for watching Hulu shows. I find that from around 11pm the quality really "sucks", but up til that time its pretty good.
