Singapore Expats

Aren't you tired of the rat race in Singapore? The crowd, the traffic, the skyscrapers, the lack of nature? How often do you see people smiling in the city?

It seems that Singapore is really just a good place for visiting, and not a good place for settling down and having a family.

What are your opinions?

hooo-kay....I may criticize Singapore for a lot of things but lack of nature ISN'T one of them.

Lack of nature?!?

We got all kinds of plants at the botanic gardens, Mandai, and McRitchie. We got rats, snakes, all kinds of lizards, cockroaches, and other types of wildlife at O/T. What more do you want!?!

Speaking of rats, I think I smell (another) one.

Not a worry, I work in the pest control industry, remember.

Both here and the one I get paid for.

too bad singapore doesn't have coyotes like chicago does...

No, but it's got some cougars though I think they are called tai-tais here.

I think tai tais are different (rich/privileged housewife?) but there are definitely cougars out there that may be tai-tais as well.

I sympathize with the original post. I miss seeing a sky full of stars or driving through the country side.

Well, I miss it too (so for the seasons and a number of other things) but these are like some elements only and saying there is no nature in Singapore is not really justified (euphemistically speaking).

I do agree. Our friends who live in Bukit Batok have to chase the monkeys out of their kitchen with the water sprayer sometimes.

I spent half of today getting lost in a tropical jungle and had to smile when I saw this thread. The walking trails in MacRitchie take you right into the heart of the primary rainforest surrounding the reservoir. We saw snakes, lizards, giant fungi, centuries-old hardwoods; clambered over fallen tree trunks, clung onto tree roots while half sliding down slippery muddy slopes, waded through small streams, followed narrow trails that led nowhere and had to backtrack... it certainly didn't feel like the city in there!

Sungei Buloh is great for bird watching early in the morning or late in the evening. I've seen majestic purple herons, wild kites, kingfishers diving for food; water hens sometimes follow you around if you walk quietly enough.

Or try Chek Jawa on Pulau Ubin, where you can walk in a mangrove swamp and see crabs, mudskippers and all sorts of creatures you don't even recognise. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident wild boars as you cycle or walk around the island.

If nature doesn't come to the OP, the OP must go to nature!

Same like most major cities. Take time out and enjoy some of the things that SG has to offer. A weekend away in Malay or Thai maybe. Keep trucking mate.

but yes, the starry starry sky at night
and a silent silent streets at night..
