Hi everyone,

I'm having a little bit of difficulty finding a place to learn Cantonese or Hakka. Has anyone heard of any place they can recommend?

So far it seems everyone is up for learning Mandarin or Japanese - but I am specifically looking for the dialects above.

The style of learning I am looking for is classroom with textbooks, def not online or with Rosetta Stone or just a language exchange.

If you can help, please do let me know, will be much appreciated!

Listen to online free lessons and search google. Listen to RTHK HK radio station. Try approaching your colleagues who know the dialect to teach you. That is the easiest. You can find many people in Chinatown that speaks cantonese, they are friendly old folks there. Some elderly will go there for sunday morning tea and will chat with you for free. greet them with "joe san" or "lay ho" and speak some English. Hope it works.

You can try to watch HK TVB drama with English subtitle to learn cantonese. If you visit Johor cinema, they so have some movies in Cantonese. Or subscribe to starhub TVB channel. If you want to learn writing Cantonese, buy a Cantonese ablum and listen to it, look at the lyrics. Try Jacky Cheung's album or Eason Chen, they are good in their pronunciation and don't do alot of slang to confuse you.

I can't commenting Hakka, I can only listen to Hakka and my impression is that there are different type of Hakka and they can sound totally different.

I ever come across advertisements that community centers offers dialect classes. Try to ask them if you really like classroom based. But go for my above suggestion to speed up your learning progress.
