I have been here for just over 2 weeks and have eaten in a few different restaurants and have found on several occasions that the food is very salty. Is this normal and does it have something to do with replacing minerals in your system or is it just poor cooking?

Can I ask where are you coming from?
Coming from Spain, I find most of the food here salt-less! So I guess it's all about what you are used to.

I am from UK and used to add salt to my food, although recently I have avoided doing this to reduce my salt intake.

What kind of restaurants are you referring to? I know in Singapore, many places uses MSG instead of salt. The thing you tasted, could be MSG?

Considering the fact that most chef in the kitchan are Asian (despite the fact that it is a Mexican/Italian/French restaurants), they may have a heavy hand in the use of MSG. I think MSG is only used commonly in Asia.
You can actually ask the restaurants to hold back on MSG/salt if you find they tend to have a heavy hand on it.

I agree! not only its heavily salted, it's also very strong tasting, how much garlic do you actually need in a plate of pasta.
