Singapore Expats

Will be moving to Singapore in a couple of weeks around Mid Feb. Looking for a decent barber to cut black hair. Some had suggested the Malay barbers. Would appreciate and feedback or suggestions. Gotta keep the hair looking good.

You may want to expand your search and include brown and blonde hair or go to the extreme and mention red.

I wonder if the OP has ever seen an Asian person? Does OP not realize that ALL Asians and most Indians have black hair?

Hehehe, when the OP said "black" hair, I am sure he is referring to the race rather than the color of the hair itself. I would imagine "black" hair is thick and curly and would require special skills/tools to handle.

Or may be the OP is looking to have those braids.

It was a classic case of demonstrating how easily one can misconstrue the written word, especially if/when talking to an international mix of persons. That's why forums usually descend into chaos once a thread gets too long. I'm sure all of us here knew exactly what the OP was referring to. But for a lot of non-native English speakers, they may not know what is inferred by "black hair".

Actually, all you need are a pair of sheep shears. But if the OP is looking for cornrows, then that's a little harder to find. Back in the 60~70's they needed hedge trimmers for the huge afro's that were so popular back then.

I seem to recall this being asked before.

My advice back then was pretend to be Nigerian (or SAFR, or what ever) and e-mail 'your' embassy, and ask the consul to suggest a hairdresser on the basis that you will be in Singapore for a few weeks to attend several high level business meetings and you need to look your best.

Which, like a lot of our comments in the past, and x9200's post, have shown just how EASY it is for the OP to use the search function on this site. Rather than having others to do their research for them.

Of course, it would have been better to have the OP just bump one of the older threads up to help keep all the info contained in as few places as possible and it also allows for updates by new/old readers with newer current info, if any.

Hi everyone. I now see how the wording on the subject created confusion. My apologies for not being explicit enough. I should have said hair for "blacks" referring to individuals of African descent. Also, I had not realized that previous threads included this topic.

Did anyone ever manage to find a decent barber for afro-carribean hair?
I've been here for 4 years, trying a different barber almost every week.

The standard of barbery? barberism?..........hairdressing here is generally poor, but there MUST be some diamonds in the dirt?

There was a period of 6 months, where I went to one guy in Little India who was of a reasonable standard. Unfortunately, he's returned to Malaysia, so am back in this predicament. Tried a few of the salons, where they have no clue what they are doing, trying to cut my hair with scissors!!!!!!!!!

Afro carribean/West Indian/African American hair + Scissors = NO NO NO!!

I just need to find someone who can do a regular high or low fade, with decent shape up that can trim me religiously every week. The shape up is more important than the fade.. I have pictures of the desired look if necessary

Does anyone have any success stories?
