Can someone recommend a good hotel to stay in during a look and see trip? Not a five star hotel, but also not a dump? Orchard area? Any advice appreciated!

That will get you quite a few hotels. If you want the Orchard area, it will be lower Orchard near Cavenaugh. Look for Holiday Inn Parkview, Hotel Grand Central, and the Concorde Hotel. These are the older hotels in the Orchard area.

At the upper end of Orchard, you could look into Orchard Parade and maybe the Pan Pacific.

Closer to the CBD, another older group of hotels includes the Peninsula and the Grand Plaza, although the Peninsula is usually loaded with tour groups.

Like someone else said, Asia Rooms is a good place to start, then go to www.streetdb.com to see where the hotel is located.

The Traders Hotel sits on top of a mall with an 'expat' grocery store, great location too.

Went and had a look around the park regis hotel at clarke quay at the weekend, got a tour of all the types of rooms from the very helpful staff. Very nice indeed the superior rooms are $238++ on their website, over thr road from clarke quay MRT so very easy to get around, will be booking for relatives and friends visiting singapore in the future

The only problem with the Park Regis is that their rooms are sooooo tiny.

Didn't seem too bad, not huge admittedly but we had a look at the Park Hotel and the novotel and they were about the same (and a lot more worn). I guess it depends on the location you want, but for clarke/robertson quay it seemed the best of the bunch

The Swissotel Merchant Court has quite big rooms, even the classic (cheapest) ones are very spacious.

I stayed a few nights in the Park Regis before crossing the street to the Swissotel and the difference in room size was huge.

Don't like the swissotel myself, rude staff and old worn rooms, no thanks

It's still a class above the Park Regis I reckon. And like I said, the room size at the Park Regis has a claustrophobic effect.

Good tv at the Park Regis though, and you can watch video-on-demand films on a pretty big screen.

Have you stayed in hotel rendezvous on bras basah road at all? They seem to be the same sort of price and star classification, wondering whether to go and have a look as the location is excellent for visiting relatives that I'll be having over soon

The Rendezvous rooms were ok'ish, the pool really sucked though. Plus my fav bar was located there but closed down and moved to Boat Quay instead...

What kind of prices are you looking at? The Fairmont has some decent rates for friends of employees, which is basically just a Facebook type promo to reel in new clients this way.

Personally I like the Swissotel as once you have their Gold Elite card then you get lounge access regardless of room type, so 2 hrs of free booze each day. You need to spend 30 days there over a period of two years to qualify though. And their current prices are ridiculous.
