Singapore Expats

Hello Everyone,

I've been ready this site for a while and I couldn't find the answers so I am hoping you can help me.

We are planning a move from the US to Singapore this August. I am debating to take the following items:

1) Lamps. I understand that I can get all the lamps to be rewired to 220Voltage but is that really practical versus just leaving this stuff in the US and then buying new lamps in SG?

2) Vacuum cleaner. I understand I can get a high end converter but is it practical and it would cost me $300US to get on. Plus, it doesn't really work that well since I have a motor attached and it won't be that efficient. I have never used these things before so any practical knowledge would be helpful.

3) Webber Grill. I understand it is quite expensive to get a grill in SG so I am planning to purchase a new one to take with us. Wise move or wishful thinking that we can grill at a condo?

4) Kitchen appliances. I have seen threads that cuts both ways on this issue. Should I take my kitchen appliances and try my luck with an non high end adaptor or should I leave all at home?

5) King mattress. We don't have housing yet and I don't know how big the apartments will be so I am inclined not to take our king mattress and just wait to purchase a new one in SG. My husband would like to take our mattress because he has back problems and if it doesn't fit then we can dispose of it in SG. However my concern is that we will have to pay someone to come in to remove the mattress and then pay a dumpster charge and it could be a hassle. Any thoughts?

Not a wise choice living in condos, more practical if you have a backyard to do the barbies. It can go either way on this

Cheaper to get it here. Master Bedrooms here are smaller compare to the one you have now at present

Electrical appliances are cheap here . Same goes to bedding. I would recommend those that are not easily available here that you would so much dearly want to get hold. There are a few yanks here. SMS, SE, Calmday MHB that can point you on what to bring over.
BTW leave the winter clothes back home as in SG , it is either wet or dry !!

Simple but good advice. If it has a cord you plug into a wall socket, unless it has dual voltage written on it, leave it home.

Bedding is approximately 6" shorter here than back home. While you could bring your bed, finding bed linen is not that easy (to fit). Additionally, as noted, most condo's are build based on the standard Asian dimensions for bedding which means you would have to walk sideways around your bed in all likelihood.

The climate? very much akin to mid-southern Louisiana, (I disagree with MS here). It is either wet or wetter. Leave winter clothes (unless you plan on going to Korea/Japan, etc on hols) home and also leave good leather goods home as they will tend to get moldy. Temperature on average is 89 degrees F year around with a fluctuation of around +/- 5 degrees.
