Singapore Expats

Gonna be staying in Singapore for 3 nights, dont really wanna stay in hotels, would like to meet some new people, can anyone advise where the backpacking areas are and if possible any recommendations of perhaps where to stay....???

Do a google on 'backpacker singapore'. There are a bunch... and I can't tell you which one is better.

Any area in Singapore is fine, but you will find that most of the backpacker places are in and around the same area in Bencoolen.

There are also backpacker places in Little India... definitely different. One around Bugis Junction area. A few in Chinatown.

Best to stay central, which most of these are. Ask for how close to MRT train stations... most any will be close to bus lines.

there are some near my place at farrer park....it is near jalan besar road as I cant really remember the name of the road

Two Ive found are on Hong Kong Road and Jalan Pinang. The description says they are both quite central.....????

There is no 'Hong Kong Road' in SG.

SG is so small that being central is a relative term. Jn. Pinang is very very central though. Likely more central than you need to be as a backpacker, in the proximity/$ equation.

My mistake, Hong Kong street is the one.

Thanks for the info, I guess the more central you are the prices and noise go up. They all have good reviews which is good to know.

Why don't you consult your Lonely Planet guide, instead of asking people on an Expat forum, who are mostly resident in Singapore and thus never have a need to stay in backpacker's places?!?

The Prince of Wales in Boat Quay recently opened. Great location, close to the mrt, free brekkie, live music on Sundays. Its pretty good, google it. Its a flat rate of $25 a night. They also have a fantastic play list.

Look at Tripadvisor.com and search under B&Bs/Inns, it lists 28 such establishments in SG.

A big chunk of expats in any country will start off as backpackers. Please don't tell me Singapore is any different as Ive met residents of Singapore, natives and expats all over Asia, in guess where... guesthouses. And why would residents not know where the backpacker areas are....????

Sorry but Singapore is different. A lot of backpackers in places like Thailand, Japan will stay as it's easy to get English teaching jobs, and in Europe and Australia it's easy to get bar work. Those possibilities don't really exist in Singapore.

Some expats in Singapore will undoubtably have started as backpackers, but a "big chunk"? I sincerly doubt it
