Singapore Expats

Got home today, to find a nice letter for me. I'm from the UK and married to a Singaporean. I got my PR in FEB after waiting 6 MTHS and now got this letter today saying that i have to register for NS. I got my PR due to my wife being my sponsor and not under the PTS, so i was wondering if i have to worry about doing NS cause I'm getting abit old now, b/day is on Sunday as well.

All male PR as a result of the Family Ties scheme, if under the age of 40 will receive the letter. Yes you have to register/report for NS and do your time!

Nah, kidding. Unless you are under 25, then you might have to, but most, when registering will get a letter of waiver from NS. Don't worry about it. It comes with the territory. Saint got the letter as well as a number of others on this board as well when they got their PR's due to their marriage to a local girl.

I didn't but then again, I didn't get my PR until I was over 40 to start with.

If you are a Doctor or Scientist , you will have to do time as this is a real asset to Mindef. Some has gone thru this path
It used to be years ago PRs perform CD albeit Civil Defence protocol but then that was years ago.

Could always try filing an appeal. You never know your luck!

Ahhh...we all have to register when receiving PR...but luckily a pink exemption letter follows shortly afterwards.

Remember though, they can always withdraw the exemption.

That's too bad. For a couple of years of service you could have had real cheap golf at some great golf courses.

Yeah, I understand you tried your damnedest to get in for the golf, but they figured that considering you were only slightly less antique than me, they better not, as you would be out there showing up all the young recruits being followed around by their maids lugging their backpacks, why you are just striding along with your backpack and a full set as well.

One thing I don't understand with the National service for PRs thing - what happens if Singapore goes to war with, say, Indonesia, will they expect all the Indonesian PRs to fight against their own country? It just seems a rather ridiculous rule to me, PRs don't get all the benefits that citizens get so why should they be expected to perform all the duties?
