Singapore Expats

Hi Everyone,

I am moving to Singapore shortly and would like know if I should purchase rain boots for my 2 young kids and other rain gear. I know it is quite hot there so I don't know if wearing flip flops and carrying an umbrella is a better idea.

I was thinking of purchasing light rain jackets and rain boots.

If you are buying it in the west, it will be too expensive and too heavy. Why not see what is normally used here, foul weather gear can be gotten here cheaply, to say the least. In fact, one store used to let you borrow umbrella's and you could return them then next time to visited the store (if you could remember to bring it when it wasn't raining.)

Flip flops and umbrella is the way to go.

The concept of seasons is limited in SG, and likewise the concept of rain-gear.

goretex doesn't work in this part of the world. skip 'em.

get a "collapsible" umbrella for each of your girls. if they're big, kids usually don't bring them out.

IMO it's okay to walk bare feet in singapore but flipflops are easy to stuff in most bags...

I would second the suggestion on the collapsible umbrellas. There are some nice ones - small and light - especially the ones made in Japan.

Rain jackets can be too warm. And bulky, compared to the umbrellas.

Better yet, if you could get your hands on a collapsible umbrella that unfolds into the size of a golf umbrella, that'll be pretty sweet. Those small, dinky umbrellas are no good for tall people.

I have one--and I kid you not, we were able to use it and there was five of us. And yes, it was raining. Not torrential though.
